David Mervyn Johns (18 February 1899 – 6 September 1992) was a distinctive Welsh film and television character actor who became an unexpected star of British films during World War II. Continuing into the postwar era, he was a notable mainstay of Ealing Studios.
Mervyn Johns started his career in the theatre in the 1920s, and then made his first film in 1935. Among his dozens of film roles were the church Warden in Went the Day Well? (1942), the fearful architect Walter Craig in the mystery film Dead of Night (1945) and Bob Cratchit in Scrooge (1951) with Alastair Sim. Johns also made many television appearances, in series such as The Avengers, Danger Man and Dixon of Dock Green. He was well-known for his "mostly mild-mannered, lugubrious, amusing, sometimes moving 'little men'" in over 100 film and television series.
Johns was twice married. His first wife was the concert pianist Alys Steele. They had one daughter, the actress Glynis Johns, born in South Africa, with whom he appeared in The Halfway House (1944) and The Sundowners (1960). After Alys's death in 1971 he married the actress Diana Churchill in 1976.
A popular misunderstanding is that he was the elder brother of the actor Stratford Johns, but they were not related.

Suite à la rupture avec son amant, Jenny Welch vit avec sa sœur Vanessa. Sa vie amoureuse instable la pousse à aller en confessions avec le père Xavier Meldrum à l’Église, recommandé par son ami d'enfance, le prêtre Bernard Cutler. Froid et acariâtre, Meldrum abuse de sa position d'homme de Dieu pour profiter des jeunes filles fragiles venues se confesser auprès de lui. Lorsqu'elles se confient, le père Meldrum enregistre secrètement leurs secrets pour ensuite leur faire du chantage. Frustré par sa misérable vie sexuelle, il séquestre notamment sa propre mère avec l'aide d'une tortionnaire blonde et castratrice. Femme libérée, Jenny est sa nouvelle proie et Meldrum, obsédé par elle, s'immisce dans sa vie privée en la traquant, en la faisant chanter avec ses aveux sur un avortement qu'elle a subi puis en tuant les hommes qu'elle fréquente pour la remettre sur le bon chemin et pour la purifier. Triffids are tall plants capable of aggressive and seemingly intelligent behaviour. They are able to move about by "walking" on their roots, appear to communicate with each other, and possess a deadly whip-like poisonous sting that enables them to kill their victims and feed on their rotting carcasses. A romantic melodrama set against the backdrop of a smallpox epidemic which features Richard Johnson as the diligent doctor in control and Claire Bloom as his outwardly serene and devoted wife. Commencing on New Year’s Eve in the city of Bath, Dr. Steven Monks (Richard Johnson) diagnoses a mystery patient as being infected with smallpox and sets in motion a city wide quarantine to contain the outbreak. His commitment to the task is affected by the deterioration of his marriage to ex-nurse Julie (Claire Bloom) following his clandestine affair with a family friend. Monk receives an unexpected blow when the disease strikes closer to home than anticipated and Julie is diagnosed as having contracted the virus. The medical team gradually contain the outbreak until only one unidentified case remains. The search narrows the identity of final carrier down to Ruth Preston (Yolande Donlan), the woman with whom Monks had been having an affair and the wife of his close colleague Clifford (Michael Goodliffe). She’s eventually traced to a deserted house where she’s sheltering, lonely and desperately ill.

Francis Bernardone (Bradford Dillman) is the son of a wealthy cloth merchant in Assisi, who gives up all his worldly goods to dedicate himself to God. Clare (Dolores Hart) is a young aristocratic woman who, according to the film, is so taken with St. Francis that she leaves her family and becomes a nun. By this time (1212 A.D.), St. Francis has a well-established reputation for his vows of poverty. The movie goes on to note miracles (such as the appearance of the stigmata on Francis's hands and feet) and other aspects of his life, up to and including his death on October 3, 1226. The funeral befitted a man loved by man and beast alike, and ended with the birds he loved doing a flyby.

Hancock plays a downtrodden London office clerk who gives up his office job to pursue full-time his vocation as an artist. Single mindedly, and with an enthusiasm far exceeding any artistic talent (his 'art' has a 'childlike' quality - to put it mildly), he sets to work on his masterpiece Aphrodite at the Waterhole, moving to Paris where he expects his genius will be appreciated. While his 'ideas' and persona gain acceptance (indeed plaudits) among the "beat" set, legitimate art critics, like Sir Charles Broward (George Sanders), scoff at his work. He manages to achieve success, however, when the work of his former roommate, a genuinely talented painter, becomes confused with his own. The confusion is eventually resolved after a series of art exhibitions, and he returns, down but not out, to London, where he pursues his 'art' in defiance of whatever others may think of it.
