Michael Penn (born August 1, 1958) is an American singer, songwriter and composer. He is the eldest son of actor/director Leo Penn and actress Eileen Ryan, and the brother of actors Sean Penn and Chris Penn.
En 1989, il se fait connaître du grand public avec le titre No Myth, extrait de son premier album Mercy, obtient un succès commercial aux États-Unis et obtient en 1990 le MTV Video Music Award Best New Artist, récompensant le meilleur clip vidéo d'un nouvel artiste.

Melvin is a onetime medical student who has dropped out of medical training and now works (after a fashion) in a planning office of an unnamed city; the office supervisor is his big sister, so she "mothers" him instead of making him perform well.
