Il est désormais connu pour sa série Hellboy et ses spin-off. Son univers emprunte beaucoup d'éléments à Poe, Lovecraft,… Son style graphique est une ligne claire assez élégante avec de nombreux clairs-obscurs et contrastes.
En 2007, il crée avec Christopher Golden le personnage de Lord Henry Baltimore, vétéran unijambiste dans un univers uchronique où la Première Guerre Mondiale a pris fin suite à l'avènement de vampires. Une série de comics, sobrement intitulée Baltimore, narre la chasse que mène le héros pour retrouver le vampire qui assassina sa femme.
Il a également beaucoup travaillé dans le milieu du cinéma et du dessin animé, livrant des recherches de personnages et de décors pour Batman (le design de Mr. Freeze), Batman, la relève ou Atlantide, l'empire perdu. De même, il a participé de près à l'adaptation de Hellboy au cinéma.

Biography
Débutant chez Marvel Comics sur des séries telles que Rocket Racoon, Hulk ou Marvel Fanfare, Mignola est d'abord influencé par Mike Ploog. Il développe un style plus contrasté, proche du clair-obscur et du cinéma expressionniste allemand, au fil des œuvres : Cosmic Odyssey (écrit par Jim Starlin), Gotham by Gaslight (un Batman victorien écrit par Brian Augustyn), Jungle Saga (écrit par Walter Simonson) ou encore l'adaptation BD de la saga de Fafhrd & Grey Mouser tirée du Cycle des Épées de Fritz Leiber (écrit par Howard Chaykin).Il est désormais connu pour sa série Hellboy et ses spin-off. In 1944, the Nazis build a dimensional portal off the coast of Scotland. With the help of Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin, they intend to free the Ogdru Jahad—monstrous entities imprisoned in deep space—to aid them in defeating the Allies. Rasputin knows this will be an apocalyptic event that he believes will create a paradise. He opens the portal with the aid of his disciples, Ilsa von Haupstein and Obersturmbannführer Karl Ruprecht Kroenen, member of the Thule Society and Adolf Hitler's top assassin. An Allied team is sent to destroy the portal, guided by young Trevor Bruttenholm, who is well-versed in the occult. The German team is killed and the portal is destroyed—in the process absorbing Rasputin—while Haupstein and Kroenen escape. The Allied team discovers that an infant demon with a right hand of stone came through the portal; they dub him "Hellboy" and Bruttenholm adopts him.

During Christmas 1955, an 11-year-old Hellboy is told a bedtime story by his adoptive father, Trevor Broom, involving an ancient war between man and magical creatures, started by man's greed. After defeat of the magical creatures' forces, the master of the goblin blacksmiths offers to build an indestructible mechanical army for the elven King Balor. Encouraged by his son Prince Nuada, Balor orders the building of this Golden Army. The humans are devastated by the army. Balor is ridden with guilt and forms a truce with the humans: Man will keep his cities and the magical creatures will keep their forests. Nuada does not agree with the truce and leaves in exile. The magical crown controlling the army is broken into three pieces, one going to the humans and the other two kept by the elves.

In a series of flashbacks played in reverse chronological order it is related that in 1939, Professor Trevor Bruttenholm investigated a series of murders in Eastern Europe. Erzebet Ondrushko, a vampire who bathed in the blood of innocents to stay young, was responsible. She had sold her soul to the Queen of Witches, the goddess Hecate, and had just kidnapped the fiancee of one of the townsmen. When the search party confronted Erzebet in her castle, all members of the party were horribly killed, and Bruttenholm was left to face her alone. He tricked her into the sunlight, effectively destroying her.

Approaching his 111th birthday, the hobbit Bilbo Baggins begins writing down the full story of his adventure 60 years earlier for the benefit of his nephew Frodo. This connects The Hobbit with The Lord of the Rings movie 10 years earlier which had a similar scene. Long before Bilbo's involvement, the Dwarf king Thrór brings an era of prosperity for his kin under the Lonely Mountain, far to the East, until the arrival of the dragon Smaug. Destroying the nearby town of Dale, Smaug drives the Dwarves out of their mountain and takes their hoard of gold. Thrór's grandson Thorin sees King Thranduil and his Wood-elves on a nearby hillside, and is dismayed when they take their leave rather than aid his people, resulting in Thorin's everlasting hatred of Elves.

A large tidal wave, triggered by a distant explosion, threatens to drown the island of Atlantis. In the midst of an evacuation from the capital city, the Queen of Atlantis is caught by a strange, hypnotic blue light and lifted up into the "Heart of Atlantis", a powerful crystal protecting the city. In 1462, Vlad Dracula, a member of the Order of the Dragon, returns from a victory against the Turks to find his wife, Elisabeta, has committed suicide after receiving a false report of his death. Enraged that his wife is now damned for committing suicide, Dracula desecrates his chapel and renounces God, declaring that he will rise from the grave to avenge Elisabeta with all the powers of darkness. In a fit of rage, he stabs the chapel's stone cross with his sword and drinks the blood which pours out of it.
