Handsome Cockney chauffeur Alfie Elkins (Michael Caine) enjoys the favors of women, while avoiding any commitment. He ends an affair with a married woman, Siddie (Millicent Martin), just as he gets his submissive single girlfriend, Gilda (Julia Foster), pregnant. Although Alfie refuses to marry Gilda and cheats on her constantly, Gilda decides to have the child, a boy named Malcolm, and keep him rather than give him up for adoption. Over time, Alfie becomes attached to his son, but his unwillingness to commit to Gilda causes her to break up with him and instead marry Humphrey (Graham Stark), a kindly bus conductor who loves her and is willing to accept Malcolm as his own son. She also bars Alfie from any further contact with Malcolm, forcing Alfie to watch from a distance as Humphrey steps into his fatherly role. James, a young man starting with a large West End firm of estate agents and auctioneers, is ambitious to get to the top. In a cheap café he meets Charles, a drunken layabout who has everything James wants: effortless upper-class arrogance and impeccable tailoring. In return for a room to live in and loans for drink and betting, Charles agrees to tutor James in the life skills he needs to succeed. By bluff and sabotage James rises in his firm, catching the eye of the owner and of his only daughter Ann. Disaster threatens when Charles has a big win and decides to end the deal. James hastily strangles him and his landlady agrees to hide the corpse in her cellar in return for continuing sexual comfort. After long courtship, Ann agrees to marry James and her father makes him a partner in the business. Having conveniently sent his lower middle-class parents to Australia, his success will be crowned by a grand society wedding. Ann's father then confesses that he has a totally disreputable son they never see called Charles and developers who have bought the house of James's former landlady find a corpse in the cellar.

While traveling in London, Jeffrey Buckenham (Massie), a Canadian Second World War veteran, sees Sir Mark Sebastian Loddon (Bogarde) on television leading a tour of his grand family home. Buckenham was held in a German POW camp with Loddon, and while watching him, becomes convinced that he is in fact another former POW, Frank Wellney, an actor (also played by Bogarde). Buckenham publicly announces his suspicion that Wellney murdered Loddon during an escape from the POW camp, and has taken the young baronet's place. Loddon sues Buckenham for libel, but his mind is still battered by some terrible incident that occurred during his escape fifteen years before, and in time even his loyal wife (de Havilland) begins to doubt him.
