Biography

Après des études au City College of New York, il entre comme petit employé au sein des studios de Paramount situés à Long Island (État de New York).

Il part ensuite à Hollywood où il devient secrétaire de Darryl F. Zanuck et Hal Wallis. En 1945, Sperling crée avec Joseph Bernhard sa propre société de production, United States Pictures .

C'est un des membres fondateurs de la Writers Guild of America.

Lee Van Cleef stars as Captain Apache, a Native American US army officer on the case of solving the last words of a dead Commissioner, “April morning”. Each time he nears discovering the meaning of the phrase, a character dies and throws him off the trail. The journey eventually takes the captain to a train, one which pulls a private rail road car named “April Morning”, transporting President Ulysses S. Grant. Putting the information together leads the Captain to the realizing an assassination is about to take place and he is the only one who can prevent it.

Military Intelligence officer and former policeman Lt. Col. Daniel Kiley (Fonda) and his pilot, Joe, are flying a reconnaissance mission over the Ardennes forest, spotting a German staff car. Under the ground in a subterranean lair, German Col. Martin Hessler (Shaw), a fictional character loosely based on SS-Standartenführer Jochen Peiper, is briefed by his superior, Gen. Kohler (Werner Peters). Kohler points out a clock with a 50-hour countdown, which is the time allotted for the operation, beyond which Germany has no resources for full-scale attack. At the same time German soldiers disguised as American troops, led by Lt. Schumacher (Ty Hardin), are tasked with seizing vital bridges and sowing confusion behind the Allied lines.

The film begins with off-screen narration over black-and-white historical footage of the WWII Burmese campaign, including mention of all American allies who participated.
