Mitchell Leisen (born October 6, 1898, Menominee, Michigan–d. October 28, 1972, Los Angeles) was an American director, art director, and costume designer.

Biography

Créateur de costumes, surtout pour les films de Cecil B. DeMille, au début des années 1920 mais aussi pour ceux d’Allan Dwan, Ernst Lubitsch, Raoul Walsh, décorateur par la suite, il devient assistant réalisateur avec Cecil B. De Mille pour Le Signe de la croix. Il commence une carrière de réalisateur pour la Paramount Pictures à partir de 1933 tout en continuant ses travaux de costumier et de décorateur.

Georges Iscovescu (Boyer) recounts his story to a Hollywood film director at Paramount. He is a Romanian-born gigolo who arrived in a Mexican border town seeking entry to the US. Jack Ellery (Oakie) is staging a lavish musical revue, starring Eric Lander (Brisson), Ann Ware (Carlisle), and Rita Ross (Michael), supported by a cast of a hundred background singers/dancers (almost all women, and many scantily clad) and two full orchestras. On opening night, just before the show, somebody tries to kill Ware several times. Ellery calls in police lieutenant Murdock (McLaglen) of the homicide squad to investigate. During the show a private detective and then Rita are murdered. Ellery hides this from the rest of the performers, claiming the victims are just sick, and talks Murdock into investigating while the revue continues on, otherwise Ellery will go broke.
