Mohsen Makhmalbaf (Persian: محسن مخملباف‎, Mohsen Makhmalbaaf; born May 29, 1957) is an acclaimed Iranian film director, writer, editor, and producer. He has made more than 20 feature films, won some 50 awards and been a jury in more than 15 major film festivals. His award-winning films include Kandahar, and his latest film is the The Gardener.

Makhmalbaf's films have been widely presented at international film festivals in the past ten years. The director belongs to the new wave movement of Iranian cinema. Time magazine selected Makhmalbaf's 2001 film Kandahar as one of the top 100 films of all time. In 2006, he was a member of the Jury at the Venice film festival.

Makhmalbaf left Iran in 2005 shortly after the election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and has lived in Paris since the events of the 2009 Iranian presidential election.

Biography

A well-known Iranian director, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, plans to make a film for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of cinema. He placed an advertisement in a newspaper in order to hire one hundred actors. He has prepared 1000 application forms, but 5000 people show up. The result is a riot in which the applicants are trampled on and wounded. Mohsen Makhmalbaf auditions dozens of men and women in front of the camera; their statements, which are by turns funny and touching, reveal the reality of life in Iran. Thus, the director enables us to see and understand those intellectuals, students and children and above all the women, who can not normally be heard or seen. It shows, once again, that cinema is of vital importance in countries such as Iran.

Hossain Sabzian is a cinephile, and in particular a big fan of popular Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf. One day, Sabzian is riding a bus with a copy of the novel The Cyclist; Mrs. Ahankhah sits next to him, revealing she is a fan of the novel's film adaptation. Sabzian tells her that he himself is Makhmalbaf, the maker. She is then surprised that a famous director would ride public transportation; Sabzian explains in response (posing as Makhmalbaf) that he finds his film subjects this way, telling her that art must spring from life. Posing as Makhmalbaf from this point on, Sabzian visits the Ahankhah family several times over the next two weeks. He flatters them by saying he wants to use not only their house in his next film, but also their sons as actors in it. He even obtains a substantial amount of money from them (ostensibly to prepare for the film). Mr. Ahankhah has his suspicions, however, especially when a magazine photo shows a younger Makhmalbaf with darker hair than that of Sabzian. He invites a journalist (Hossain Farazmand) over, who confirms Sabzian is indeed an impostor. The police come to arrest Sabzian, while Farazmand takes several pictures for his upcoming article: "Bogus Makhmalbaf Arrested." Kiarostami intersperses these scenes throughout the film, in which the events described above do not progress chronologically; they are re-enactments.
