Monica Vitti (born 3 November 1931) is an Italian actress best known for her starring roles in films directed by Michelangelo Antonioni during the early 1960s. After working with Antonioni, Vitti changed focus and began making comedies, working with director Mario Monicelli on many films. She has appeared opposite Marcello Mastroianni, Richard Harris, Terence Stamp, Michael Caine and Dirk Bogarde. Vitti won five David di Donatello Awards for best Actress, seven Italian Golden Globes for Best Actress, the Career Golden Globe, and the Venice Film Festival Career Golden Lion Award.
In 1995 Vitti married Roberto Russo, with whom she has lived since 1975.
Alzheimer's disease has removed her from the public gaze for the last 15 years.

Biography
Michelangelo Antonioni and Vitti met in the late 1950s, and their relationship grew stronger after L'Avventura was made, because it had shaped both their careers. However, by the late 1960s, they didn't make any movies together, making the relationship strained until it officially ended. In a later interview, Vitti stated that Antonioni ended their relationship.In 1995 Vitti married Roberto Russo, with whom she has lived since 1975.
Alzheimer's disease has removed her from the public gaze for the last 15 years.

On her birthday, Margherita (Monica Vitti) receives a video camera from a friend, who is a film director (Elliott Gould). She decides to use the device to keep a diary of her life. As the camera is capable of recording automatically, snippets usually feature her talking. However, on one occasion, Margherita leaves the camera in her bedroom as it was still recording; it catches Margherita's husband, Paolo (Gino Pernice), who has always had a distant demeanor to her, as he cheats on her with her best friend (Catherine Spaak). A secret scandal ensues in their separation with Paolo's departure and Margherita going into a deep depression, even to the point of contemplating suicide. Her friend, the director who gave her the camera, examines the film, and concludes that it is interesting material for an actual movie.

Nico (Sebastiano Nardone) et sa femme Alba (Elena Sofia Ricci) sont les propriétaires du Motel Nevada, un petit hôtel de campagne, avec une station-service incluse géré par leur employé, Giogiò (Francesco Scali ). Faute de clients, le couple vivote entre problèmes financiers et jeux érotiques. Sebastiano, jeune poète anarchiste, est grièvement blessé par les gardes alors qu'il tente de s'introduire dans le château d'Oberwald où vit la reine qu'il projette d'assassiner. Mais, affaibli par ses blessures, il s'évanouit. La reine, endeuillée par la mort du roi, suspecte le chef de la police, car son propre décès lui permettrait de devenir régent. Depuis le meurtre de son mari, la reine a perdu goût à la vie et ne demande guère mieux que de subir un sort identique. Elle séquestre le jeune rebelle et le présente comme son lecteur attitré. Ils tombent très rapidement amoureux l'un de l'autre et Sebastiano l'incite à reconquérir son royaume. Le chef de la police, le comte Föhn, n'ignore pas que Sebastiano est caché au château. Il le fait bientôt arrêter et lui propose un marché : convaincre la reine d'abandonner son trône contre la vie sauve et la liberté. Sebastiano préfère se suicider à l'aide d'une pilule empoisonnée. Furieuse, la reine lui fait croire qu'elle ne l'a jamais aimé. Dans un dernier effort, Sebastiano, s'armant d'un pistolet, la tue. Les deux amants s'effondrent, leurs mains cherchant à se rejoindre.
