Mutsuko Sakura (桜 むつ子, Sakura Mutsuko, 15 February 1921 – 23 January 2005) was a Japanese actress.

Her hobby was golf. She started work at Shochiku in 1950, and played supporting roles in some of Yasujirō Ozu's films. She was a constant in Japanese film and TV drama for half of the 20th century.

Le village de Hanatani dans la vallée de la préfecture de Tokushima va être submergé lors de la construction d'un barrage. On a hot summer's day, 13 schoolgirls are bored in a remedial math class. One girl, Tomoko, watches the school's brass band leave to perform at a baseball game, but they have forgotten their bento lunches. Tomoko and the other girls persuade their teacher, Mr Ozawa, to let them deliver the lunches. On the train, Tomoko eats a lunch, and the girls fall asleep and miss their stop. By the time they deliver the lunches to the swing band, they have spoiled, and all 42 band members become sick. Only the cymbal player, Nakamura, whose lunch Tomoko ate, is unaffected.

The film is set at the Akitsu health spa. Just after World War II, Shusaku Kawamoto (Hiroyuki Nagato) who is suffering from tuberculosis, has come to Akitsu to die. One young girl, Shinko (Mariko Okada), refuses to let him and invigorates him on the slow path to recovery. They fall in love, and in one of his darker moments, Shusaku asks Shinko to join him in double suicide. She accepts his love but not ready to die. Neither, it transpires, is Shusaku, and slowly they part. Time passes, Shinko finds out that Shusaku is married with a child, and he seems to have no interest in her any more.
