Biography
Ktari was born in Sayada in Tunisia on 17 May 1943. Ktari studied film in Paris and later in Rome. He worked as an assistant on Raiders of the Lost Ark when Stephen Spielberg was filming in Tunisia in 1981. His first film which was partly funded in Libya was called The Ambassadors (Les Ambassadeurs}. This film won the Tanit d'or award in 1976 at the Carthage Film Festival.Ktari's second feature film was not made until 2000. À peine rétabli d'une grave dépression et contre l'avis de son psychiatre, Slah, metteur en scène de théâtre, mentalement fragilisé par son parcours professionnel, annonce à sa femme Amel, une femme riche qui finance ses projets, sa décision de monter la célèbre pièce de théâtre Essoud (Le Barrage) de Mahmoud Messadi réputée par sa complexité. Mais le soir même, au volant de sa voiture, Slah renverse une jeune femme prénommée Aïcha. D'abord désemparé, il éprouve par la suite une étrange fascination pour cette belle jeune fille jeune fille anticonformiste qui devient son amie et sa muse. Amel, soutien moral, affectif et financier de son mari réussit à convaincre le directeur du théâtre de programmer Le Barrage. Bien que souffrant en silence de la présence de Aïcha, Amel décide par amour pour son mari d'inviter la jeune femme auprès d'eux, dans le domaine de ses parents, dans une oasis du sud de la Tunisie. Un étrange ménage à trois se forme alors où se révèlent doutes et suspicions, désirs et tentations, amour et complicités.

In the Goutte d'Or neighborhood of Paris, North African immigrants share a tiny apartment amongst their French neighbors. The two communities get along uneasily, their relationship rife with misunderstandings and mutual offense. Salah (Sidi Ali Kouiret), from the southern Maghreb, is a witness to this immigrant life in Paris and to the day to day incidents which make up the life of his compatriots. They, excepting those willing to pursue a life of petty crime, live a life of tedium and depression. French racists in the area escalate tensions with a series of attacks that end in a double murder. Salah, with the help of his friends, decides to organise protests against the injustice they face.
