Nancy Guild (October 11, 1925 – August 16, 1999) was an American film actress of the 1940s and 1950s. The actress appeared in Somewhere in the Night (1946); The Brasher Doubloon (1947) and the comedy Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man (1951). Although appearing in major films, Guild never achieved as much fame at 20th Century Fox, the studio that had signed her to a seven-year contract, had hoped for, and eventually gave up acting for marriage.

Biography

Having divorced Russell in 1950, Guild married the Broadway impresario Ernest H. Martin, the producer of Guys and Dolls and later The Sound of Music and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. She appeared occasionally on television and briefly returned to the movies in Otto Preminger's Such Good Friends (1971).

In 1975, she divorced Martin and married photojournalist John Bryson in 1978. She divorced Bryson in 1995. She died in East Hampton, New York on August 16, 1999, aged 73.

Manhattanite Julie Messinger, a complacent housewife and mother of two raucous young sons, is married to Richard, a chauvinistic and self-centered magazine art director and author of a best-selling children's book. When he falls into a coma during minor surgery to remove a nonmalignant mole on his neck, Julie learns from his doctor, Dr. Timmy Spector, that another surgeon nicked his artery, necessitating a blood transfusion to which he had a rare allergic reaction. The following day, Julie is told Richard has overcome the reaction, but his liver has sustained serious damage requiring immediate treatment. In quick succession, all his organs begin to fail.

Lou Francis (Lou Costello) and Bud Alexander (Bud Abbott) have just graduated from a private detective school. Tommy Nelson (Arthur Franz), a middleweight boxer, comes to them with their first case. Tommy recently escaped from jail after being accused of murdering his manager, and asks the duo to accompany him on a visit to his fiancée, Helen Gray (Nancy Guild). He wants her uncle, Dr. Philip Gray (Gavin Muir), to inject him with a special serum he has developed which will render Tommy invisible, and hopes to use the newfound invisibility to investigate his manager's murder and prove his innocence. Dr. Gray adamantly refuses, arguing that the serum is still unstable, recalling that the formula's discoverer John Griffin was driven insane by the formula and did not become visible again until after he was killed. However, as the police arrive Tommy injects himself with it and successfully becomes invisible. Detective Roberts (William Frawley) questions Dr. Gray and Helen while Bud and Lou search for Tommy.
