When Mina (Alba Rohrwacher) and Jude (Adam Driver) first meet, it's under the worst of circumstances; Mina finds herself accidentally trapped in a bathroom with Jude, who is suffering from food poisoning induced diarrhea. Despite this awkward first encounter, the two form a seemingly strong relationship. However when Mina announces that she's going to return to Italy Jude initiates a sexual encounter that ends with him cumming inside of her, despite Mina specifically requesting otherwise. Mina becomes pregnant as a result of the encounter, which further ties her to Jude and prevents her from traveling to Italy. The pregnancy ends up putting a large amount of strain on their relationship since Mina is obsessed with purity and greatly distrusts modern medicine. While Jude wants her to visit an obstetrician he decides to trust Mina's decision to rely more on alternative and traditional medicine, even going so far as to attend a meeting with a psychic, who declares the fetus an Indigo child. However once the baby is born Mina begins putting the infant on a vegan diet, which concerns Jude, who begins to secretly go against Mina's parenting techniques. This puts the two parents at odds with one another and Mina begins to further obsess about keeping the child pure, at one point feeding the child an anti-nutrient oil because Jude fed the child some meat. As things progress the relationship continues on a downward spiral that puts the child's well-being and life at risk.

Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton) is a faded Hollywood actor best known for playing the superhero Birdman decades ago in a series of films. He is often tormented by the mocking, critical inner voice of Birdman, and frequently visualizes himself performing feats of levitation and telekinesis. The film opens with a quotation from Raymond Carver stating that the main fulfillment in life is related to having once been loved, then cuts to a dramatic atmospheric disturbance resembling a meteor descending in flames. The film then cuts to a surreal shot depicting Riggan as levitating in his stage room. Riggan hopes to reinvent his career by writing, directing, and starring in a Broadway production of a loosely based adaptation of Carver's short story "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love".

Though balancing those two worlds has its fair share of challenges, Kate generally manages to come out on top thanks to the support of her best friend, Allison (Christina Hendricks), who's had plenty of experience balancing kids and a career. Meanwhile, on the other end of the spectrum, Kate's associate assistant, Momo (Olivia Munn), lives for her work and is afraid of settling down. Just when Kate lands a lucrative new account that will see her traveling across the country on a regular basis, however, her new business associate Jack (Pierce Brosnan) makes advances on her, and Richard receives a job offer he can't turn down. In 1996, Jamie Randall (Jake Gyllenhaal) is fired from a Pittsburgh electronics store for having sex with his manager's girlfriend. His wealthy brother Josh (Josh Gad) announces at the dinner table at their parents' (George Segal and Jill Clayburgh) house that he has found Jamie a job as a pharmaceutical sales representative. After attending a Pfizer training program where he has sex with the instructor (Kate Jennings Grant), Jamie goes to work for the company and tries to get doctors to prescribe Zoloft and Zithromax. He is rebuffed, much to the dismay of his regional manager, Bruce (Oliver Platt), who sees Jamie as his ticket to the "big leagues" of Chicago. Bruce says if Jamie can get Dr. Knight (Hank Azaria) to prescribe Zoloft instead of Prozac, other doctors will follow his lead. Jamie tries to get access to Dr. Knight by hitting on his female employees until, exasperated, Dr. Knight unethically permits him to observe him at work, during which time he accidentally sees a disrobing patient, Maggie Murdock (Anne Hathaway), who suffers from early onset Parkinson's disease.
