Son père, Noah Young, est un mineur du Lancashire (Angleterre) émigré au Colorado en 1874, habitué des combats à mains nues. Sa mère, Mary Anson, a été contremaître dans la mine de Glenrock (Wyoming) avant de devenir inspecteur des mines de charbon de l'état du Wyoming.Noah Young Jr., ancien champion d'haltérophilie, apparaît aux côtés de Laurel et Hardy dans des films réalisés par Hal Roach. Dr. J. Dockweiler Droop (Robert Woolsey) is a carnival charlatan, scamming local shills out of their hard earned money. He adopted Rosie (Anita Louise) when she was three, and has raised her to become a pretty young woman, who is just as good an operator as her adoptive father is. As they pass through a small town, Rosie falls in love with Billy Lowe (John Darrow), and pleads with Dockweiler to leave the carnival life and settle down. Dockweiler agrees, and the two leave the carnival.

George (George O'Brien) is a sailor and smooth-talking lady's man who believes in the adage "love 'em and leave 'em" when it comes to women. While on leave in Morocco, George meets Lorette (Lois Moran), a fiery French dancing girl who falls madly in love with him, unaware that he has a girl in every port. Initially thinking of her as just another diversion, George soon discovers that he can't get rid of the girl. Later, she follows him to the United States, but does his best to avoid her. Hardy enrolls Laurel at a boxing competition. Laurel, however, is too weak, and unfortunately loses. Hardy then seeks advice from an insurer on how to easily earn a lot of money: Laurel has to have an injury, so that Hardy can then pocket the insurance money. Hardy places a banana peel on a sidewalk, bringing Laurel there. But a pastry chef stumbles on the peel, and gets angry with Hardy, throwing a pie in his face. Hardy responds to the provocation, and soon the entire city block is involved in an epic battle of pies.

Rich oil tycoon (Finlayson) awakens one morning after a night of carousing to be told that he was married the night before. In 1895, champion horse racer and livery stable owner Hank Armstrong (Russell Simpson) is greatly disturbed by the advent of the "horseless carriage" in Maple City. He mocks Elmer Hays, a car manufacturer, when he states in a public lecture that the days of the horse are numbered and that a car will one day go 30 miles an hour. However, Armstrong's efforts are in vain. Every boy on the street is in love with Becky. But her father, Papa Whisselberg, insists that they be Jewish. While getting her hair cut, Becky encounters an Irish-looking boy who can't take his eyes off of her. He tries to follow her home but is temporarily sidelined by a policeman who winds up falling into a pit of water. He finally meets up with her, and she falls for him. Becky warns him against entering, saying her father would be brokenhearted if she married a non-Jewish boy. That night, the boy climbs the fire escape to meet Becky in her room. At the same time, a thief enters the house, the policeman in pursuit. Confusion ensues: the thief tries to disguise himself as a woman in a nightgown but his pants give him away. As he escorts the captured thief, the policeman again falls into the pit of water; the scene fades as he throws down his badge.
