Paidi Jairaj, Jayraj or Jai Raj (Telugu: పైడి జైరాజ్) (September 28, 1909 – August 11, 2000) was a renowned film actor, director and producer. He was recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke Award for lifetime achievement in 1980.

Biography

He married a Punjabi lady, Savithri. He had two sons and three daughters. He died in Bombay on August 11, 2000.

Well known for his believes in fairness, justice, and fair play, Raja Prithviraj holds sway over a large rural territory in India. His word is the law, and no one would dare to cross swords with him. Prithviraj lives with his only daughter, Tejeshwani, in their exclusive palace. Aarti Verma (Rekha) is a widow with two children. She is an unattractive woman with a large birthmark on her face. Aarti's husband died in a car accident under mysterious circumstances, and her father (Saeed Jaffrey) is one of the richest and most famous businessmen in the city. However, when Aarti's father is murdered by his worker Hiralal (Kader Khan), Aarti's world is completely destroyed. She does not find any sense for her life, except bringing up her children. Hiralal pretends to be a friend, and takes care of her like a father. He brings his poor nephew Sanjay (Kabir Bedi) from abroad, who is also the lover of Aarti's best friend Nandini (Sonu Walia). Although Nandini loves Aarti, she is intensely in love with Sanjay, and after he requests her to help him, she finally agrees to help him rob Aarti of her wealth.

Indu (Shabana Azmi) and DK (Naseeruddin Shah) have a happy marriage and two daughters — Rinky and Minni — and live in Delhi. The tranquility of their life is interrupted when DK receives word that he has a son, the result of an affair with Bhavana (Supriya Pathak) during his visit to Nainital when his wife Indu was about to give birth to their first child Rinky. Bhavana did not tell DK about their son as she did not want to disturb DK's matrimonial life. Now that she has died, her guardian Masterji sends word to DK informing him that his son, Rahul (Jugal Hansraj), who is eight years old, needs a home. Despite the objections of Indu, who is devastated to learn of her husband's infidelity, DK brings the boy to stay with them in Delhi. Thakur Virendra Singh lives a wealthy lifestyle in India along with his wife and a son, Kumar (Ranjeet). His relative Bihari (Om Shivpuri) is envious, and successfully switches his son, Kishan (Rajesh Khanna), with Kumar, and also ends up killing Virendra. The film takes place in the 19th Century British India and is the story of the fight for independence from the British between 1825 to 1875. The film tells the story of men that lead the war against British Rule: Sanga (Dilip Kumar), Bharat (Manoj Kumar) known as Kranti, a prince (Shashi Kapoor) and a freedom fighter (Shatrughan Sinha). Sanga is an honest and dedicated employee in the kingdom of Ramgarh, owing allegiance and loyalty to no one except Raja Laxman Singh. When Laxman Singh conditionally permits the British to use the port for trading purposes, Sangha finds out that the British are taking out gold and jewellery and bringing in ammunition, and puts a stop to this. He goes to report this outrage to Laxman Singh, only to find him stabbed to death. Sanga is charged with treason and of killing Laxman Singh. Sentenced to death, he escapes and forms a group of revolutionaries who have only one goal - to drive the British out of India. This group multiplies into several armies, all united with one slogan - an Independent India, also known as Kranti.

Suraj and Malti are in love and get very intimate. They are introduced to their respective families, and there is approval all round, and their marriage is to be finalized soon. Before that could happen, Suraj meets with an accident and is killed instantly, leaving Malti devastated. Malti's dad, Charandas, is shocked to find that Malti is pregnant, and both of them re-locate to a secluded area, where Malti's gives birth to a baby boy. Charandas has the child disposed off in a garbage can, and tells Malti that the child died. Malti recovers and subsequently marries Mr. O.P. Bakshi, and settles down. Years later, while watching a dance show with her husband, Malti sees a young man who resembles her husband in every shape and form. She attempts to make inquiries, but is afraid of what her husband will think when he finds out that the young man is her son, born out of marriage. The young man is Jyoti, who was left in a garbage can at the time of his birth, but is now a dreaded, ruthless, and much feared criminal don, going by the name of Jwala.
