Alessandro Pes est un scénariste à succès mais ce que tout le monde ignore c'est qu'il est à court d'idées depuis une décennie et que celle qui écrit les scénarios qu'il signe est en réalité Valeria Tramonti, la modeste secrétaire de la maison de production où il est sous contrat. En ce moment, Alessandro est aux abois. Vitelli, son producteur et son nouvel associé Spadafora ont déjà engagé le grand metteur en scène Jerzy Kunze ainsi que les principaux acteurs et lui, comme d'habitude, n'a pas pondu une ligne. Il presse son amie (et parfois un peu plus) Valeria de le tirer de ce mauvais pas. The film tells the short life of the great Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi. A noble, his birth's in Recanati, and soon Giacomo learns to study Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic and English in the rich library of his palace that his father built. Giacomo, however, possessing an inquisitive, restless spirit, would like to know to travel abroad to widen his views and enrich his knowledge, as was usual for European landed gentry in the 19th century. Still this desire of his lies at odds with his parents (his father, while possessing a sensibility akin to his, is too bound by the social conventions and the expectations tied to his role as 'Pater Familias'; his mother, on the other hand, is too busy shoring up the household declining fortunes to even care about intellectual aspirations). So the poet begins to write his first works, reflecting about human condition, coming to the conclusion that unhappiness is a costant factor of human existence, and that in life there is no way to remedy this problem. In 1820s, Leopardi can finally leave the native Recanati, and travels to Rome and Florence where, however, his high expectations of intellectual rewards and public recognition are frustrated. Suffering from repeated instances of unrequited love: chiefly that he felt towards the Countess Fanny Targioni Tozzetti, contribute to Leopardi's negative view of life and human experience. Finally he moves to Naples, where a physical decadence led him to death.

In a small village in Umbria, the film director Gianni is in deep creative crisis. He lives like a bum, no longer an idea to create a movie when its problems if there is another bigger than all the others. The film traces the last hours of the life of poet and film director Pier Paolo Pasolini. The poet is killed at night in 1975 on the beach at Ostia, near Rome. A boy is arrested: Pino Pelosi, and charged with murder. The police and judges believe that Pelosi is the only murderer of Pasolini, but his injuries on the body of the poet are too severe and profound. Then are called to bear witness to the death of the poet his sister and his mother, destroyed by grief. As the process unfolds, the film examines the personality of Pasolini, and his works and, above all explains what people think of him in Italy. Pasolini according to some Italians was a provocative man: he deserved what he suffered, having been a Communist and a homosexual. Instead, his friends and intellectuals remember him as a very good and sensible man, who sought only to fight against neo-fascism and the cruel and bigoted mentality of middle-class society.

The Sciascia story unfolds with the arrival in Sicily of a medicine rep from Verona. He is a unaware of being witness to a double murder at a rural railway station and hears of the event on the car radio. He calls on the local police station to help with the enquiries. The police had already discovered the body of a retired ambassador, who had returned after years of absence, to in his remote farmhouse, after calling them to alert them of his discovery of a item (a stolen painting) rolled up in the attic. The police did not call that night as the duty Inspector who left soon after insisted the Brigadiere should tarry as it might be a hoax as he knew the Farmhose to be abandoned. The following day the strange appearance of the retired ambassador's body which appeared to have been a suicide, raises suspicion in the Brigadiere that he may have been murdered. This remains the investigating policeman's opinion but is totally rejected by the Police Commissioner who insists on a simple and uncomplicated suicide. There is a suggestion that the Carabinieri who have also turned up at the crime scene are aware of the alternative theory the Brigadiere had mulled over with the Carabiniere driver and repeated to his superior the Colonel. Meanwhile interrogation of the Veronese witness clarifies that he had not seen the railway staff but their murderers rolling up a "carpet"/ painting in the station. The film follows the investigation as it proceeds with an old friend of the "suicide" a professor Franzo also revealing more on the telephone conversations they had exchanged before the ambassador's death. It looked to the police as though the Farm buildings had been used for criminal activity for some time. The inspector however appeared to be overly familiar with the inside of the Great house and real doubts entered the Brigadiere's mind as to his real involvement in the crime. The Procurator/judge insisted unreasonably the police Commissioner and Carabinieri should give him more and cast iron evidence if he were to proceed with any case, as in his view all he heard were conjectures. The estranged widow and son of the ambassador arrive and the extent of the family rift is evident. They appear to have relied on the local parish priest Don Cricco to oversee the mainly abandoned family properties in the area. The film ends with an accident in which the Inspector and Brigadiere exchange pistol shots, killing the Inspector. The police call it an accident.
