Thomas, ancien militaire revient dans la ville de sa jeunesse qu'il avait quittée alors que Chelsea, son amour d'enfance lui avait brisé le cœur. Lors de son retour il se fait arrêter par la police locale où il fait la connaissance d'une policière qui vient de Chicago, Nancy. Dès son arrivée en ville, il va rendre visite à sa grand-mère souffrante qui est à l'hôpital et en attendant sa guérison il accepte de gérer l'auberge qu'elle possède : l'auberge des amoureux "cupid's auberge". Pendant ce temps Chelsea qui est devenue maire est associée à un projet de centre commercial qui se trouvera sur l'emplacement de l'auberge. Dans le même temps, Thomas découvre qu'il a 92 000 dollars de retard de taxes foncières à payer. Il envisage de vendre l'auberge mais par amour pour sa grand-mère il ne peut se résoudre à cette solution. Une complicité s'installe entre Thomas et Nancy qui s'associe à lui pour sauver l'auberge tandis que Chelsea continue à être sournoise pour récupérer l'auberge et Thomas.

The film opens with Brandon (David DeRuiter), Tony (Haven Lamoureux), Brittany (Jessica Landon) and Tiffany (Nicole Cavazos) arriving at the fast food restaurant "Hella Burger". While there, the group are continuously insulted over the intercom system, causing a furious Tony to enter. As he searches, he is attacked by the restaurant's mascot, Horny the Clown. Brandon soon enters, only to find Tony dead in the deep fat fryer before he is attacked and butchered by Horny with a meat cleaver. Horny proceeds outside and murders Brittany and Tiffany.

In 1997, Sarah Huttinger (Jennifer Aniston), an obituary and wedding announcement writer for The New York Times, travels to Pasadena, California, for her sister Annie's (Mena Suvari) wedding, accompanied by her fiancé Jeff Daly (Mark Ruffalo). In 1821, Don Diego De La Vega (Anthony Hopkins) fights against the Spanish in the Mexican War of Independence as Zorro, a mysterious swordsman who defends the Mexican peasants and commoners of Las Californias. L.A.P.D. Sergeants Martin Riggs (Gibson) and Roger Murtaugh (Glover) arrive at an evacuated building believed to have a bomb in it. Against orders, they go inside to investigate the bomb. Riggs decides to deactivate the bomb himself instead of waiting for the Bomb Squad to arrive. Unfortunately, he causes the bomb to detonate and the whole building to collapse. This causes them to be demoted to uniform duties, which upsets Murtaugh because he only has seven days until retirement. While on street patrol, the two thwart a robbery using a duplicate armored car, although they only manage to catch one of the two would-be thieves. During the arrest, it is discovered the criminals were armed with a new type of armor-piercing bullet, informally referred to as "cop killers". For their efforts in stopping the raid, Riggs and Murtaugh are reinstated as Detective Sergeants by their superior, Captain Murphy (Kahan). Murphy introduces internal affairs Sergeant Lorna Cole (Russo) to the two detectives and informs them that the suspect they have in custody from the raid is a known associate of former L.A.P.D. Lieutenant and suspected arms dealer: Jack Travis (Wilson).
