Un tueur en série solitaire atteint de TOC, Jack, sévit dans l'état de Washington dans les années 1970 et 1980 pendant les mêmes années que le tueur à gages dit « Ice Man ». Ingénieur perfectionniste, surnommé « Monsieur Sophistication » en raison de sa maniaquerie et de sa passion pour la mise en scène de ses assassinats, il cherche à commettre le crime parfait tout en considérant chaque meurtre en soi comme une œuvre d'art. Alors que la police s'apprête à l'arrêter dans la chambre froide où il stocke ses victimes, Verge (qui est en fait Virgile) lui apparaît et le guide vers les enfers. Trois squelettes ont été découverts derrière une cloison rapportée dans un vieil appartement non occupé depuis plus de 15 ans, mais dont le loyer est régulièrement payé. On 27 April 1940, a Luftwaffe Heinkel He 111 bomber (1H+CT) is shot down near Grotli by a Fleet Air Arm Blackburn Skua (L2940) fighter. Three of the German crew are survivors: pilot Leutnant Horst Schopis (Florian Lukas), Unteroffizier Josef Schwartz (David Kross) and Feldwebel Wolfgang Strunk (Stig Henrik Hoff), set off looking for shelter. The film begins with an introductory sequence involving the main characters and images from space and introducing many of the film's visual leitmotifs. These are motifs of virtually still images revealing the key elements of the film: Justine the bride in deep melancholy with birds falling behind her; of a lawn with trees and sundial with two different shadows; Pieter Breughel's Hunters in the Snow (often used as interpretation of an idealised nostalgia) burning; the non existent 19th hole (limbo) and the Black Horse collapsing catastrophically in slow motion (Id, ego and super-ego battle); Justine as a bride being swept along by a river; and her being held back by her wedding dress; and finally Justine and her nephew building their magic cave before the Earth crashes into Melancholia becoming one.
