Peter Hess Stone (February 27, 1930 – April 26, 2003) was an American writer for theater, television and movies.

Biography

Peter Stone est le fils de John Stone , un ancien professeur d'histoire de New York devenu producteur de cinéma pour Twentieth Century Fox, sa mère Hilda ayant écrit plusieurs scénarios.

Il grandit à Beverly Hills, et aime aller voir les pièces en tournée à Los Angeles. Avec dans l'idée d'écrire pour le théâtre, il fait ses études au Bard College, à New York, ce qui lui permet d'aller souvent voir les pièces et les comédies musicales de Broadway.

Il poursuit ses études à l'Université Yale, et obtient en 1953 un diplôme d'art dramatique. Les années suivantes, il devient journaliste spécialisé dans les spectacles, et part vivre en France, où sa mère a déménagé après son divorce avec John Stone. Il est suffisamment proche de son beau-père, l'agent littéraire George Marton, pour prendre parfois comme pseudonyme "Pierre Marton".

Au début des années 1960, il écrit pour la télévision et le cinéma. Il écrit ainsi le scénario du film Charade, et le succès de ce film lui permet d'être sous contrat avec Universal Studios. Dans le même temps, il écrit le livret de plusieurs comédies musicales à succès pour Broadway.

Regina "Reggie" Lampert (Audrey Hepburn), on a skiing holiday in Megève, tells her friend Sylvie Gaudel (Dominique Minot) that she has decided to divorce her husband Charles. She then meets a charming stranger, Peter Joshua (Cary Grant). When she returns to Paris, her apartment is completely empty, and police inspector Edouard Grandpierre (Jacques Marin) notifies her that Charles has been murdered while leaving Paris. Reggie is given her husband's travel bag, containing a letter addressed to her, a ticket to Venezuela, passports in multiple names, and other items. At the funeral, three odd characters show up to view the body. One sticks the corpse with a pin and another places a mirror in front of the body's mouth and nose, both to verify that Charles is really dead.

Quincy Drew (Garner) and Jason O'Rourke (Gossett) travel from town to town in the south of the United States during the slavery era. Both men first meet when O'Rourke sells Drew a stolen horse belonging to the local Sheriff. They meet again by chance in jail after pulling various con jobs. (In comic relief they both pull out an Ace of Spades as they play cards.) They develop a con together in which Drew claims to be a down-on-his-luck slave owner who is selling O'Rourke as a slave. Drew gets the bidding rolling, sells O'Rourke, and the two later meet up to split the profit. O'Rourke was born a free man in New Jersey and is very well educated.
