Peter Tewksbury (March 21, 1923 – February 20, 2003) was an American film and television director who directed Sunday in New York with Jane Fonda in 1963, the "Father Knows Best" TV series (131 episodes, 1954-1960), and a pair of Elvis Presley movies. He directed the entire first season of the television situation comedy My Three Sons and also frequently served as a producer and writer for the series. He also created It's a Man's World (TV series), and collaborated with J.D. Salinger on a film adaptation of the author's “For Esmé With Love and Squalor,” which was never produced after a casting dispute between the two men.

Sam Whiskey (Reynolds), an adventurer and rogue in the Old West, is seduced by widow Laura Breckenridge (Dickinson) into promising to retrieve $250,000 in gold bars from a riverboat that sank in Colorado's Platte River. The gold had been stolen by Laura's late husband from the Denver Mint and replaced by plated fakes. She offers Sam $20,000 to recover and return it before the theft is discovered and her family name is ruined. Sam enlists the help of Jedidiah Hooker (Davis), a local blacksmith, and O. W. Bandy (Walker), an Army friend turned inventor, offering them shares of the reward.

Eileen Tyler (Fonda), a 22-year-old Albany Times Union music critic, is suffering from her breakup with Russ (Robert Culp) from a rich Albany family. She comes to New York City to visit her brother Adam (Robertson), who is an airline pilot. Eileen confides to her brother that she thinks she may be the only 22-year-old virgin left in the world. Adam assures her that sex is not what all men look for and insists he hasn't slept around. Of course, Adam is lying and is in hot pursuit of a tryst with his occasional girlfriend Mona. However, Adam's date with Mona has a series of job related interruptions. Meanwhile, Eileen decides to see if she can have some fun for herself in New York, and seems to find the perfect candidate in Mike (Taylor), a man she meets on the bus. Pendant son voyage vers Berlin, le jeune Émile Tischbein se fait voler les 400 Deutsche marks qu'il devait apporter à sa grand-mère de la poche de sa veste. Il soupçonne immédiatement son voisin de siège M. Grundeis, connu dans le monde des truands sous le nom de « la Taupe ». Seul dans la grande ville, Emile commence sa filature. Il fait la connaissance de « Gustave au klaxon » un adolescent qui commande à une bande des enfants qui jouent aux détectives. Le petit groupe d'enfants reprend l'affaire et établit un plan de bataille.
