Philipp Stölzl, né à Munich en 1967, est un réalisateur allemand.

Biography

Phillipp Stölzl réalise essentiellement des clips musicaux. Dès 1997, il met ainsi en scène le célèbre groupe Rammstein. Sa carrière dans la vidéomusique comprend ainsi plusieurs stars allemandes mais aussi des stars internationales telle Madonna, pour qui il réalise le clip de sa chanson American Pie. Il officie également dans la publicité télévisuelle.

En 2000, il réalise son premier long-métrage cinématographique, Morituri Te Salutant. Duel au sommet (Nordwand, 2008), coproduit avec l'Autriche et la Suisse, est distribué à l'international.

Ben Logan, an American single parent who has recently moved with his estranged daughter to Belgium, works for a multinational technology corporation called Halgate Group. When one of his co-workers discovers that a patent has been apparently misfiled, Logan brings it to the attention of his boss, Derek Kohler. The movie portrays an attempt in 1936 to summit the Eiger via the north face by two competing climbing teams. The more prominently featured pair of German climbers are Toni Kurz (Fürmann) and Andi Hinterstoisser (Lukas) from Berchtesgaden. After being refused leave from the German army (falsely claiming one of them is getting married and the other is to be Best Man), they quit their service in order to make the attempt. They are portrayed as being more interested in mountaineering than in the current politics of the time. The competing team of Austrians that eventually teams up with the German team are portrayed as hoping for a Nazi-led incorporation of Austria into Germany. Watching their summit attempt is their childhood friend Luise (Wokalek), now working for a German newspaper, who is accompanied by her cynical superior Mr. Arau (Tukur).
