La Chèvre features Depardieu as the tough-guy private detective Campana, hired to find Marie, the daughter of a rich businessman, who has mysteriously disappeared while vacationing in Mexico. The case turns out to be complicated – several attempts to find her have already failed. A psychologist, Meyer, who works for the businessman, suggests a plan. Marie is known to be extremely unlucky and accident-prone; the psychologist advises sending someone equally accident-prone to find her, on the theory that what happened to her may also happen to him, and thus, following her steps while the detective tags along, the daughter can be found and returned home. Richard's character Perrin is an awkward, accident-prone accountant who works for the businessman, and is chosen to implement the scheme. The adventures of an odd duo begin.

Alexandre, homme bon vivant et nonchalant, est cultivateur dans une ferme française de la Beauce. Cependant sa vie quotidienne est dirigée par « la Grande », son ambitieuse mais néanmoins tyrannique épouse, qui le pousse à bout de force en lui imposant chaque jour une liste de travaux démesurée. Devenu brutalement veuf, il éprouve un grand soulagement et se sent libéré de son labeur : il décide de s'accorder un repos qu'il juge mérité, afin de prendre le temps de savourer la vie. Son comportement sème rapidement le trouble dans le petit village par l'exemple qu'il donne, et une partie des habitants décide de le forcer à reprendre le travail. Maxime is overwhelmed boss of a company working ambulance. Deceived by his wife, he refuses to forgive her. On the way back, Olga divert the route to go for the black boy Tiemoko, son of an African deportable without papers, to hide the home away from authorities. Maxime take the opportunity to spend a few days with her parents, away from his occupational and marital troubles. Despite the quarrels of his parents, he discovered his mother's concern for her father, who, under the air of jovial loving good bottles and cigarettes banned his wife is in poor health. The son and rediscover the feelings of love and generosity of his parents, his "heroes" torque model in which he seeks a way to overcome his own problems. The small Tiemoko just cement this family solutions.

Bernard Milan, the second-in-command of France's Counter-Espionage department, is out to discredit his chief Louis Toulouse so that he can supplant him. When a French heroin smuggler who has been arrested in New York claims that the drug smuggling was a secret mission on the orders of French Counter-Espionage (actually on Milan's orders), the resulting bad press reflects on Toulouse, who cannot prove that Milan was responsible. In retaliation, Toulouse hatches a plot to deal with his ambitious subordinate: in a room which he knows is filled with hidden microphones, he sends his assistant Perrache to Orly airport at 9:30AM the next morning, making Milan (who has been listening) believe that Perrache has gone to meet a master spy who will expose Milan's treachery. However, Toulouse secretly instructs Perrache to choose someone at random from the crowd of travelers arriving at that time.

A teenaged boy has run away from home. His father is ineffective at finding him, so his mother contacts two former lovers from around the time her son was conceived, telling them both that the child is their son and asking them to look for him. One of them (Depardieu) is a tough journalist investigating the Mafia, while the other (Richard) is a timid former teacher who was on the verge of committing suicide when he received the telephone call. The two former boyfriends finally meet, and together they locate the son. They both argue who is really the father. In the end the son tells both Depardieu and Richard (while the other is out of earshot) that his mother thinks that he is the father. Thus, the son adopts both of them as his fathers, and also reconciles with his real father.
