Pola Illéry (December 18, 1909 – October 19, 1993) was a Romanian-born actress who appeared in both silent and early talking films.

She was born Paula Iliescu in Barlad, Romania. Illéry appeared in a few French films made during the 1920s and 1930s, most notably René Clair's Under the Roofs of Paris (1930) and in Parada Paramount, the Romanian-language version of Paramount on Parade (1930) made in Paris by Paramount Pictures. She is believed to have made her last film appearance in 1940 in Tobie est un ange.

Illéry married American Air Corps major Charles Grenier during World War II and moved to United States with him. The marriage only lasted a few months when he was killed in an accident. She later married Jim Gibson and the couple moved to Palos Verdes where Illéry lived for the rest of her life.

She died on October 19, 1993 in Los Angeles, California.

Biography

Pola Illéry commence sa carrière en France en 1928, à l'époque des derniers films muets, et figure dans Le Capitaine Fracasse d'Alberto Cavalcanti et Henry Wulschleger en 1929. Dans les années 1930, elle apparaît dans une quinzaine de films en France et en Roumanie, notamment dans Sous les toits de Paris, le premier film parlant de René Clair (1930), Le Petit Chaperon rouge d'Alberto Cavalcanti (1930) où elle a pour partenaire Jean Renoir, 14 juillet de René Clair (1933), Le Tigre du Bengale et Le Tombeau hindou de Richard Eichberg (1938).

Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, elle part s'installer aux États-Unis et obtient la nationalité américaine en 1946. Mariée en 1947, elle a quatre enfants.

Elle meurt le 19 octobre 1993. En 2012, un faux avis de décès a été publié dans de nombreux journaux, y compris le The Daily Telegraph et est apparu sur de nombreux sites Web ; les rapports ont été plus tard révélé être un canular, Pola Illéry est en fait morte en 1993, et en outre la plupart des informations publiées étaient également incorrectes.

In a working-class district of Paris, Albert, an impecunious street singer, lives in an attic room. He meets a beautiful Romanian girl, Pola, and falls in love with her; but he is not the only one, since his best friend Louis and the gangster Fred are also under her spell. One evening Pola dares not return home because Fred has stolen her key and she does not feel safe. She spends the night with Albert who, reluctantly remaining the gentleman, sleeps on the floor and leaves his bed to Pola. They soon decide to get married, but fate prevents them when Émile, a thief, deposits with Albert a bag full of stolen goods. It is discovered by the police, and Albert is sent to prison. Pola finds consolation with Louis. Later Émile is caught in his turn and admits that Albert was not his accomplice, which earns Albert his freedom. Fred has just got back together with Pola who has fallen out with Louis, and in a jealous fury at Albert's return Fred decides to provoke a knife fight with him. Louis rushes to Albert's rescue and the two comrades are re-united, but their friendship is clouded by the realisation that each of them is in love with Pola. Finally Albert decides to give up Pola to Louis.
