In Spain of the 1960s, a poor family of quinquis (mercheros), a nomadic ethnic group with a tradition as old as that of the gitanos (gypsies) of Spain and of obscure origins, live as poor nomads. Alfredo Moreno est agent de Police à Paris. Marié mais séparé de sa femme, il rencontre Virginie, une jolie blonde plutôt intéressée. Mais la Police espagnole l'appelle pour venir reconnaître un corps qu'ils pensent être celui de sa femme. Il part avec Virginie, pensant prendre un week-end au soleil et récupère les affaires de sa femme, mais le corps semble introuvable. En fouillant les affaires, ils tombent sur un billet du loto qui s'avère être le gros lot. Alfredo décide de faire un aller-retour à Paris pour retirer la somme gagnée, de quitter son boulot et de revenir dans les bras de Virginie. Mais Virginie a rencontré un Français qu'elle trouve à son goût sur la plage, et a prévenu J.B.M., un ami à Paris qui doit tenter de pigeonner Alfredo pendant son passage à Paris.
