Simon, un étudiant en médecine de 23 ans, fait face à des changements inévitables dans la vie, mais auxquels il résiste. Il vit en colocation avec trois amis, Knud, Søren et Esbe, qui ont tous des projets pour leur avenir proche. C’est l’été à Copenhague, et Simon préférerait vivre dans le présent. Avec Knud, qui est son meilleur ami, il espère réussir à un examen qui leur permettrait de passer six mois en Bolivie. Ce serait l’occasion parfaite pour échapper à la ville étouffante et vivre une véritable aventure. Cependant, comme Knud a une petite amie, Mia, bien qu’ils se disputent souvent pour se réconcilier ensuite, que Søren va bientôt se marier et qu’Esbe voudrait essayer de vivre seul, Simon est forcé de chercher d’autres solutions pour continuer de mener la même vie insouciante. Au début, il se dit qu’il va continuer de voir Emilie, une serveuse jeune et gaie, mais à mesure que ses amis s’éloignent de lui et que la frustration qui s’ensuit croît, il devient agressif.

Nordvest est l’un des quartiers multiethniques les plus pauvres de Copenhague. Casper, jeune homme de 18 ans, y vit avec sa mère, son petit frère et sa petite sœur. Princess Caroline Matilda of Great Britain is shown writing a letter to her children in which she professes to tell them the truth. Eleven days before the parliamentary election, the Centre Party's main candidate, who is about to become the next Danish Prime Minister and his wife have a car accident. His situation is critical and nobody knows if he will survive. Even his wife, who is also hospitalised, is not informed. The next day, Torp is assigned to cover the election. Quickly, he is drawn into the internal power struggle in the Centre Party where two very different politicians, Erik Dreyer and Lone Kjeldsen, show interest in gaining power and potentially becoming the next Prime Minister. Torp, the son of a previous justice minister, writes his first front-page story after a tip-off from the Centre Party press coordinator, Peter Schou. The story turns out to be "planted spin" in order to damage Lone Kjeldsen (Nastja Arcel) to allow the advantage to Dreyer who benefits from her lost credibility.

Breaking the Waves tells the story of Bess McNeill, a pretty young Scottish woman with a history of psychological problems.
