Ray Lovejoy, né le 18 février 1939 et mort à Londres le 18 octobre 2001, est un monteur de film britannique ayant une trentaine d’œuvres à son actif. Il a eu notamment une collaboration remarquable avec le réalisateur Peter Yates pour qui il a travaillé sur plus de six films, dont L'Habilleur (The Dresser, 1983), qui a été nominé pour de nombreux BAFTA Awards et Oscars Il a également beaucoup travaillé avec Stanley Kubrick dont 2001, l'Odyssée de l'espace (1968).

In the year 2058, Earth will soon be uninhabitable due to irreversible effects of pollution. The United Global Space Force prepares the first launch for the colonization of a distant planet much like our own. The film is based on the true story of Derek Bentley. Within the film, Bentley (Eccleston) is an illiterate young adult with developmental disabilities who falls into a gang led by a younger teenager named Chris Craig (Reynolds). The two become trapped by the police, who tell Chris to put down his gun. Bentley says, "Let him have it, Chris." Chris begins firing, killing one officer and wounding another. Because he is a minor (under 18), Chris is given a minor sentence, but Bentley, although he did not shoot anyone, is sentenced to death, on the basis that his statement to Chris was an instigation to begin shooting.

Around Christmas, a United States Supreme Court Justice commits suicide, for which no explanation or context is given. We only see the Justice making a tape recording and then shooting himself.
