Reginald Beck was a British film editor with forty-nine credits. He was born in Russia, but his family emigrated to Britain while still a child. He began working in the film industry in 1927 when he joined Gainsborough Pictures before going on to work on quota quickies at Wembley Studios. He later worked with a number of directors including Carol Reed, David Lean, Laurence Olivier and Joseph Losey. In his obituary, Anthony Sloman wrote of the seventeen films that Beck edited with director Losey, "Their professional and personal relationship was regarded as one of the great screen partnerships".
Beck worked with Laurence Olivier on Henry V (1944) and on Hamlet (1948). Sloman writes, "above all, it is for his immense contributions to Henry V and Hamlet that the British film industry is forever in his debt."

The film closely follows the "American" version of Brecht's play Galileo. In 1609 Galileo is a mathematics professor in Padua, Italy. While his salary is inadequate, he possesses the freedom to pursue controversial scientific studies under the protection of the Venetian republic. Part of his work involves the use of a telescope, a relatively new scientific instrument brought from the Netherlands. Using the telescope, Galileo seeks to test the theories put forth by Nicolaus Copernicus that place the sun – and not the Earth – at the center of universe. As his research progress, Galileo accepts a more prestigious academic position in Florence, Italy. But his new position does not come with the government protection he enjoyed in Venice, and his friends in the higher echelons of the Roman Catholic Church refuse to come to his aid when he is summoned before the Inquisition.

Exiled from the Soviet Union in 1929, Leon Trotsky travels from Turkey to France to Norway, before arriving in Mexico in January 1937. The film begins in Mexico City in 1940, during a May Day celebration. The story follows a young boy named Leo Colston (Dominic Guard), who in the year 1900 is invited by a school friend, Marcus Maudsley (Richard Gibson), to spend the summer holidays at a Norfolk country house occupied by his family. While Leo is there, Marcus is taken sick, and Leo finds himself becoming a messenger (go-between) carrying messages between Marcus's older sister, Marian Maudsley (Julie Christie), and a farmer neighbour, Ted Burgess (Alan Bates) with whom she is secretly in love. However, her parents want her to become engaged to the owner of the house and estate, Hugh, Viscount Trimingham (played by Edward Fox). A heatwave leads to a thunderstorm, which coincides with Leo's birthday party and the climax of the film, when Marion's mother and Leo find Marion and Burgess making love in an outbuilding. This event has a long-lasting impact on Leo, and Burgess shoots himself with his own gun in his farmhouse kitchen.

The film opens with two men running across a beach at dawn, it also appears that their hands are tied behind their backs. After several shots of a helicopter frantically searching the landscape, it becomes apparent that the two men are escapees of some kind. It is later revealed that their names are MacConnachie and Ansell. The two continue running across barren land, trying to escape the sight of the helicopter. MacConnachie continuously berates Ansell as they run, showing that he is the leader, more or less.

The story centers on a married Oxford professor, Stephen, who is experiencing a mid-life crisis. The world changes for him when he meets Anna, a beautiful young student, who is engaged to another of his students, William. Following a car accident outside Stephen's home in which William is killed and Anna is severely disoriented, she is obliged to remain with Stephen although his wife is out of town.
