René Clément ([klemɑ̃]; March 18, 1913 – March 17, 1996) was a French film director and screenwriter.

Biography

René Clément, fils du décorateur Maurice Clément, a fréquenté le lycée de Bordeaux et l’École des Beaux-Arts à Paris, où il a étudié l’architecture. Après la mort de son père il a interrompu ses études et s’est consacré au cinéma, par lequel il était déjà passionné à l’adolescence.

L’œuvre de René Clément est souvent controversée. Il est tantôt qualifié de technicien « vulgaire » sans âme, tantôt il est élevé au rang de meilleur cinéaste français. En 1934, il rencontra Jacques Tati et commença à travailler avec lui. Il fait son service militaire au Service cinématographique de l’Armée. Il réalisa son premier court-métrage avec Jacques Tati, une comédie légère, Soigne ton gauche. Ensuite, pendant les années trente, il commença à tourner des films documentaires. En 1937, il voyagea avec l’archéologue Jules Barthoux au Yémen pour tourner un documentaire sur ce pays. Il fut atteint du typhus et même incarcéré à plusieurs reprises.

Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il continua à se consacrer aux documentaires, jusqu’à ce qu’en 1945 le thème de la résistance s’impose à lui pour son premier long-métrage. Un an plus tard, La bataille du Rail sort dans les salles. Le film met en scène la résistance des cheminots pendant l’Occupation allemande, valant à son auteur le prix du jury au Festival de Cannes de 1946. Clément devint un des metteurs en scène français les plus en vue de l’après-guerre. Six ans plus tard suivit son probable plus gros succès, Jeux interdits (1952), qui remporta le Lion d’or à Venise et l’Oscar du meilleur film en langue étrangère.

Pour chacun de ses nouveaux films il utilisa un style différent : de l’adaptation littéraire comme Gervaise (1956, d’après le roman L’Assommoir d’Émile Zola) ou Plein Soleil (1960 d’après le roman Monsieur Ripley de Patricia Highsmith), des thrillers comme Le passager de la pluie (1969) ou La Course du lièvre à travers les champs (1972) , jusqu’au drame psychologique comme Les Félins (1962) et des souvenirs de la Seconde Guerre mondiale avec Paris brûle-t-il ? (1966).
En 1982 Alain Delon réalisa un film intitulé "Le Battant" il le dédia à celui qu'il appelait son maître : René Clément.

« Chacun de mes films est la somme de tout ce que j'ai appris auparavant dans tous les domaines », déclarait René Clément. Membre fondateur de l'Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinématographiques (IDHEC), ce touche-à-tout sera élu à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts en 1986. Il mourra dix ans plus tard, à Monaco, la veille de son 83e anniversaire.

Tom is fixated on Philippe and his girlfriend Marge (Marie Laforêt) and covets the other man's life. Philippe eventually grows bored with his friend's fawning and becomes cruel and abusive to him. The final straw is when, during a yachting trip, Philippe strands Tom in the dinghy and leaves him to lie in the sun for hours.

In Monte Carlo, Marc, a handsome cardsharp, escapes American gangsters who have been ordered to kill him by the boss of a New York gang because he had an affair with the boss's wife. Marc hides in a mission for the poor where Barbara, a wealthy widow, finds him and hires him as her chauffeur. At Barbara's chateau, Melinda, Barbara's niece, becomes attracted to him. Marc discovers that Barbara is hiding her lover, Vincent, in the secret rooms and passageways of the chateau. She and Vincent (a bank robber sought by the police for murdering Barbara's husband) plan to murder Marc so that Vincent may use his passport in escaping to South America. Marc and Barbara begin an affair but are discovered by Vincent, who then kills Barbara but is himself killed by the American gangsters, who mistake him for Marc. Marc and Melinda plan to dispose of the two bodies, but when Melinda learns that Marc is planning to leave without her, she tricks the police into believing Marc guilty and forces him to hide in the chateau's secret rooms. He is her prisoner, just as Vincent had been her aunt's.

It is June 1940, during the Battle of France. After five-year-old Paulette's parents and pet dog die in a German air attack on a column of refugees fleeing Paris, the traumatized child meets 10-year-old Michel Dollé whose peasant family takes her in.
