Nanna Maria, the matriarch of a Fijian extended family living in a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand, feels that the heart and passion has gone out of her clan. One morning, she demands that her grown grandchildren put on a big family feast at which she will name her successor. Six months after the events of the first film, Neo and Trinity are now lovers. Morpheus receives a message from Captain Niobe of the Logos calling an emergency meeting of all of Zion's ships. Zion has confirmed the last transmission of the Osiris: an army of Sentinels is tunneling towards Zion and will reach it within 72 hours. Commander Lock orders all ships to return to Zion to prepare for the onslaught, but Morpheus asks one ship to remain in order to contact the Oracle. The Caduceus receives a message from the Oracle, and the Nebuchadnezzar ventures out so Neo can contact her. One of the Caduceus crew, Bane, encounters Agent Smith, who takes over Bane's avatar. Smith then uses this avatar to leave the Matrix, gaining control of Bane's real body.

Neo and Bane lie unconscious in the medical bay of the ship Hammer. Meanwhile, Neo finds his digital self trapped in a virtual subway station—-named, "Mobil Ave.", "mobil", being an anagram for "limbo"-a transition zone between the Matrix and the Machine City. In that subway station, he meets a "family" of programs, including a girl named Sati, whose father tells Neo the subway is controlled by the Trainman, an exiled program loyal to the Merovingian. When Neo tries to board a train with the family, the Trainman refuses and overpowers him.

Lorsqu'une tempête emporte un canot transportant un jeune garçon à terre sur une petite île du Pacifique Sud, il est d'abord bien accueilli comme un cadeau du ciel, au point même que le chef de tribu l'adopte comme successeur. Cependant, avec le temps, alors que les difficultés sont imputées à Tama (comme il est nommé), il est finalement banni pour vivre avec les personnes les plus pauvres de l'île, Mahana et son père ivre. Mahana est considérée comme accueillante et indésirable, mais Tama se sent différemment, alors quand il sera assez vieux pour construire un bateau pour s'enfuir, il jure de revenir la chercher un jour. Un coup de chance l'amène à débarquer sur l'île du légendaire Johnny Lingo, le commerçant le plus riche des îles, et après des années à son service, Tama a beaucoup appris sur la vie et sur lui-même alors qu'il rêve d'honorer son engagement envers Mahana.
