Richard Sylbert (16 April 1928 – 23 March 2002) was an Academy Award-winning production designer and art director, primarily for feature films.

Biography

Après avoir servi dans l'infanterie lors de la Guerre de Corée, Richard Sylbert et son frère Paul étudient la peinture à la Tyler School of Art de l'Université Temple à Philadelphie. Richard étudie aussi auprès de William Cameron Menzies et fera d'ailleurs sa première collaboration pour le cinéma dans un film dirigé par ce dernier.

À ses débuts, Sylbert travaille surtout pour la télévision (NBC à New York), d'abord comme décorateur de plateau. Il devient directeur artistique sur la série télévisée Inner Sanctum en 1954, et en 1956 travaille pour la première fois en tant que tel pour le cinéma sur Rapaces . Il retrouvera son frère sur le film Baby Doll.

Sylbert sera aussi producteur associé sur Quoi de neuf, Pussycat ?, et en 1975 il devient le seul directeur artistique à être vice-président chargé de la production, à la Paramount. Néanmoins, en 1978, il quitte Paramount pour redevenir directeur artistique.

At an illegal card game, a young street urchin (Charlie Korsmo) witnesses the massacre of a group of mobsters named Shoulders (Stig Eldred), Stooge (Jim Wilkey), the Rodent (Neil Summers), the Brow (Chuck Hicks) and Little Face (Lawrence Steven Meyers) at the hands of Flattop (William Forsythe) and Itchy (Ed O'Ross), two of the hoods on the payroll of Alphonse "Big Boy" Caprice (Al Pacino). Grace Beasley has been content with life as a housewife. One morning, Grace wins tickets to a concert by her favorite singer. Red Corner tells the story of a wealthy American businessman named Jack Moore (played by Richard Gere) working in China and attempting to put together a satellite communications deal as part of a joint venture with the Chinese government. Before the deal goes through, he is framed for the murder of a powerful Chinese general's daughter, and the satellite contract is awarded to Moore's competitor, Gerhardt Hoffman. Moore's court-appointed lawyer Shen Yuelin, (played by Bai Ling), initially does not believe his claims of innocence, but the pair gradually unearth further evidence that not only vindicates Moore but also implicates powerful figures within the Chinese central government administration, exposing undeniable conspiracy and corruption. Shen manages to convince several high-ranking Chinese officials to release evidence that proves Moore's innocence. Moore is quickly released from prison while the conspirators that framed him are arrested. At the airport, Moore asks Shen to leave China with him, but she decides to stay as there are many more things to change in China. However, she admits that meeting Moore has changed her life, and she considers him part of her family now. They both then share a heartfelt hug on the airport runway.
