Mais le metteur en scène a abandonné le projet pour cause de retards importants dans le financement et le choix des dates de tournage, problèmes engendrés par la grève des scénaristes à Hollywood de la fin de l'année 2007. Le tournage était prévu pour l'été 2008. Avec Sarde, ils n'ont trouvé aucun remplaçant à Polanski pour réaliser cette superproduction et ont dû geler le projet. Ils ont finalement produit le dernier Polanski : The Ghost Writer, autre adaptation de Robert Harris. Biography
Sa société R.B Production est basée à Paris. Il a occupé les fonctions de producteur exécutif sur l'Union sacrée d'Alexandre Arcady, Les Marmottes d'Élie Chouraqui puis Après l'Amour et Les Enfants du siècle de Diane Kurys. Il a produit, en compagnie d'Alain Sarde, Le Pianiste (Palme d'or à Cannes en 2002 et César du meilleur film en 2003) puis Oliver Twist de Roman Polanski. À la tête d'un grand groupe de casinos, Max Zagury, un homme d'affaires respectable, mène une vie heureuse. Fier de sa réussite sociale, il est surtout très satisfait de voir sa fille, Lisa, réussir dans tous les domaines. Il nourrit d'ailleurs pour elle des projets ambitieux. Il rêve ainsi de la marier, et dans la plus pure tradition juive, avec le fils de son meilleur ami. Soupçonneux, il a toutefois décidé d'embaucher un homme chargé de la surveiller en permanence. Lorsqu'il apprend que Lisa est déjà amoureuse d'un autre prétendant, il voit rouge, d'autant plus qu'il s'agit d'un «goy» (non-juif). Pour ce père un peu trop directif, c'en est trop. Lisa va essayer, tout en douceur, de le faire changer d'avis.

En 1988, Simon Atlan, flic juif pied-noir est à Sète pour faire arrêter un cargo dont l'équipage et le capitaine sont des trafiquants de drogue et d'armes. En 1894, le capitaine Alfred Dreyfus, officier français de confession juive, est condamné à la déportation à vie pour avoir fourni des documents secrets à l'Allemagne. Le commandant Marie-Georges Picquart, promu lieutenant-colonel et chef du Deuxième Bureau, découvre que le commandant Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy espionne pour l'Allemagne et que son propre adjoint, Hubert Henry, sait que le véritable traître n'est pas Dreyfus mais Esterhazy, surnommé Dubois. Thomas is a writer-director of a new play, an adaptation of the 1870 novel Venus in Furs by Austrian author Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. Alone in a Parisian theatre after a day of auditioning actresses for the lead character, Wanda von Dunayev, Thomas laments on the phone of the poor performances to come through. As he is preparing to leave the theatre, an actress named Vanda arrives disheveled. In a whirlwind of energy and unrestrained aggression, Vanda convinces the director to let her read for the part. To Thomas's amazement, Vanda shows great understanding of the character and knows every line by heart. As the audition progresses, the intensity is redoubled and the attraction of Thomas turns into obsession.

A British ghostwriter (Ewan McGregor), who is never named, is recruited by Rhinehart Inc., a large publishing company, to complete the memoirs of former Prime Minister Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan). His predecessor on the project and Lang's long-term aide, Mike McAra, has recently died in an apparent accident. The writer travels to the fictional Massachusetts village of Old Haven on Martha's Vineyard, where Lang is staying with his wife, Ruth (Olivia Williams), in the house of Marty Rhinehart, the company owner, and a staff of servants and security personnel. The writer is checked into a small hotel. Lang's personal assistant (and implied mistress), Amelia Bly (Kim Cattrall), forbids him to take McAra's manuscript outside, emphasizing that it is a security risk. Rhinehart is allowing the new ghost four weeks to complete the book.

In the 1800s, young orphan Oliver Twist is forcibly brought to a workhouse in an unidentified town In England on his ninth birthday. He and the other resident children are treated poorly and given very little food. Facing starvation, the boys select Oliver (through a lottery) to ask for more food at the next meal, which he tentatively does. This results in Oliver being chastised, and the workhouse officials, who are wealthy, well-fed, hypocritical men, decide to get rid of him. After nearly being sold as an apprentice to a cruel chimney sweep, Oliver is sent to Mr. Sowerberry, a coffin-maker, whose wife and senior apprentice take an instant dislike to the newcomer. After more poor treatment, Oliver snaps and attacks Noah, the snotty older apprentice, for having insulted his mother. Knowing his life with the Sowerberrys will only get worse, Oliver escapes on foot early the next morning.

In September 1939, Władysław Szpilman (Adrien Brody), a Polish-Jewish pianist, is playing live on the radio in Warsaw when the station is bombed during Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland which caused the outbreak of World War II. Samuel Bellamy, jeune inspecteur de police, est lié d'amitié avec Joseph Katz, un vieux brocanteur juif rescapé des camps de la mort.
