À Bourg-Fidèle, petit village des Ardennes (pendant la guerre), il est devenu de plus en plus difficile pour Clovis Parizel, ouvrier de fonderie, de nourrir sa famille. Un jour, il arrive à son dernier sac de patates. Sa femme, Mathilde, lui conseille d'aller voir les Guignard, parents d'un camarade de guerre prisonnier en Allemagne, pour leur apporter la lettre qu'il a reçue de leur fils et leur demander quelques patates. D'abord hésitant quant à cette idée, c'est sur une suggestion de son beau-frère, douanier, qui lui conseille de se les faire envoyer par chemin de fer, qu'il décide finalement de passer en zone libre. Sans laissez-passer, il est obligé de descendre du train en arrivant en zone libre mais ayant oublié son chapeau, il parvient à remonter dans le train, pendant que les Allemands lui tournent le dos.

Emprisonné et destitué par le tribunal militaire à cause d’activités jugées subversives, le capitaine Richau vient d’être libéré. As airman Adrien Dufourquet embarks on an 8-day leave in Paris to see his fiancée, Agnès, two South American Indians steal an Amazon statuette from a museum and force Professor Catalan, the curator, into their car. Catalan was Agnès' father's companion on an Amazon expedition during which her father died. Catalan believes that the statuette is one of three which hold the secret to an Amazon treasure. Adrien arrives in time to see the Indians abducting Agnès, the only one who knows the location of the other statuettes, and he pursues them to the airport where he steals a ticket and boards the same plane.

It is the day that Antoine (Jean-Claude Brialy), a Paris advertising man, is to marry the lovely Gisèle (Marie Laforêt) and his best man Julien (Claude Rich), a divorced statistician, tries to talk him out of it with tales of the hard times he had from women, ending in entrapment by his stunning secretary Denise (Catherine Deneuve), a professional virgin. Going into a bistro for a quick drink before they drive to the wedding, the owner Fernand (Jean-Paul Belmondo), a retired villain and pimp, tells the two of his exploits that ended in marriage to pretty but pushy Sophie (Marie Dubois). Antoine decides to run for it, taking one of the tickets for the honeymoon in Greece and giving the other to Fernand. On board ship, he falls for the delectable Sandra (Françoise Dorléac), a professional confidence woman, who cleans him out of his money but in the end agrees to marry him. In the 18th century, Louis Dominique Bourguignon is working with Malichot's gang, but their ways are too 'unethical' for him. He hides out from Malichot and joins the army, where he and his two new friends survive by hiding out on the battlefield. Together they rob the general of his gold. Fleeing, they stop at an inn where they meet Venus, a beautiful gypsy who has been taken prisoner. He rescues her and she joins his gang. Returning to Paris, de Bourguignon creates his own band, acting under the name of Cartouche, and most of Malichot's gang join him. They make audacious robberies of the rich people, and distribute the takings with the poor. Thus, Cartouche attracts the people's sympathies, Venus's love, and hate from the Police and Malichot. Malichot goes to the police to betray Cartouche, but Cartouche can escape all the traps they set at him - except the entrapments of love. Eventually, the police use this against him and set a trap while he has a tryst with Venus in the countryside. He is captured, but his men ambush the guards as they lead him away. In the scuffle that follows, Cartouche is saved by Venus, who sacrifices her life to save him from harm. Cartouche and his men place Venus's body in an expensive carriage they stole earlier from a nobleman and roll the carriage in a lake. As the carriage slowly sinks Cartouche tells his men to disperse as he vows to avenge the death of his beloved Venus - a way that he anticipates will lead him sooner or later to the gallows.
