Robert Anthony Rodríguez (born June 20, 1968) is an American film director, screenwriter, producer, cinematographer, editor and musician. He shoots and produces many of his films in his native Texas and Mexico. He has directed such successful, and ground-breaking film Sagas, such as: the Mexico Trilogy, From Dusk Till Dawn´s film, sequels, and the upcoming TV series, The Faculty, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D, Spy Kids, Sin City, Planet Terror, and Machete. He is a friend and frequent collaborator of filmmaker Quentin Tarantino. in mid December, 2013, Rodriguez is launching his own Cable TV Channel: El Rey.

Biography

Jeunesse et formation
Robert Rodríguez est né à San Antonio dans l'État du Texas. Il est le fils de parents américano-mexicains. Sa mère Rebecca (née Villegas) était infirmière et son père Cecilio G. Rodríguez, vendeur. Il commence à s'intéresser au tournage à l'âge de 7 ans lorsque son père achète un magnétoscope et une caméra.

En parallèle à ses études à la St. Anthony High School, il s'exerce en filmant sa famille et en en faisant des petits films. À cette période, il rencontre Carlos Gallardo, futur acteur et producteur de certains de ses films, avec qui il fait davantage de petits films. Après un diplôme au College of Communication de l'Université du Texas, il crée une petite bande dessinée, dont les personnages s'inspirent beaucoup de sa famille. Malgré tout cela, il n'arrive pas à intégrer une école de cinéma. Il parvient cependant à faire publier sa BD, Los Hooligans, dans le journal étudiant The Daily Texan durant trois ans. Il continue également à réaliser de nombreux courts-métrages.


Débuts et révélation critique (années 1990)

Son court-métrage Bedhead, sorti à l'automne 1990, est récompensé 14 fois dans différents festivals. Trois de ses frères et sœurs font partie de la distribution du film, qui présente déjà tous les ingrédients de son style : un humour omniprésent, des mouvements de caméra rapides et nerveux ainsi que des zooms intenses.

En 1992, Rodríguez se fait connaître avec son premier long métrage, El Mariachi, tourné en espagnol avec un budget de 7 000 dollars. En dépit du manque de moyens, le film est un succès. Encouragé, Rodriguez s'attaque en 1995 à la suite d'El Mariachi, intitulée Desperado. Cette fois-ci, le réalisateur est soutenu par Columbia Pictures. C'est en partie grâce à ce film que Salma Hayek se fera connaître du grand public.

En 1996, Rodriguez met en scène Quentin Tarantino, qui faisait déjà une courte apparition dans Desperado, dans Une nuit en enfer, un film déjanté avec George Clooney et Harvey Keitel. Deux ans plus tard, il s'essaie à la science-fiction avec The Faculty, interprété notamment par Josh Hartnett et Elijah Wood. Le film connait un succès commercial mitigé, mais devient rapidement culte.


Confirmation commerciale (années 2000)

Rodriguez crée en 2001 la société Troublemaker Studios, spécialisée dans les effets spéciaux, afin de développer différents projets tels que la saga Spy Kids, toujours avec Antonio Banderas. Le premier opus , sorti en 2001, rapporte 100 millions de de dollars. Ce projet constitue une véritable proposition d'un cinéma d'aventure délirant pour la jeunesse. Rodriguez parvient à sortir les suites très rapidement, en 2002 puis 2003, convoquant de nombreux acteurs de ses films passés pour des rôles principaux comme secondaires.

Cependant, à l'issue de l'année 2003, il se reconnecte à son cinéma violent et adulte des années 1990, en reprenant le personnage du Mariachi avec Il était une fois au Mexique... Desperado 2, interprété à nouveau par Antonio Banderas et Salma Hayek, et avec Johnny Depp et Mickey Rourke.

En 2004, il compose quelques musiques pour Kill Bill volume 2 pour son ami Quentin Tarantino. Selon la rumeur, il n'aurait été payé qu'un dollar. En contrepartie, Tarantino viendra une journée filmer une scène de Sin City, adaptation sur grand écran de la bande dessinée Sin City de Frank Miller, cette scène se déroulant en voiture pendant le transport d'un cadavre dans les marais. Tourné en noir et blanc et retouché en numérique, le film de Robert Rodriguez et Frank Miller rencontre un énorme succès, soutenu par la présence de vedettes comme Bruce Willis et Mickey Rourke. Le film est présenté en compétition pour la Palme d'or au Festival de Cannes.

En 2005, la même année que Sin City, il renoue avec la science-fiction pour enfants et les effets en 3D pour un film dont son fils de 7 ans avait écrit le scénario, Les Aventures de Shark Boy et Lava Girl.

En 2007, il coréalise avec Quentin Tarantino le diptyque Grindhouse, dont sa partie Planète Terreur est un hommage aux films de zombies. C'est à cette occasion qu'il rencontre Rose McGowan, qui sera sa compagne jusqu'à leur séparation en 2009. Dans ce film, il fait participer plusieurs membres de sa famille, notamment son fils Rebel qui joue le fils du docteur Dakota Block, ainsi qu'Electra et Elise Avellan ses nièces qui jouent les baby-sitters jumelles.

En août 2009, il sort une nouvelle comédie d'aventure familiale, Shorts. On y retrouve son fils Rebel, ainsi que Jon Cryer, William H. Macy et James Spader. Le film ne sort pas dans les salles françaises.


Passage au second plan (années 2010)
En 2010, il produit le troisième volet de la saga Predator, Predators. Puis il coréalise avec Ethan Maniquis le film Machete, adapté de sa fausse bande-annonce pour Grindhouse.

En 2011, il réalise The Black Mamba, un court-métrage de cinq minutes pour Nike où il joue lui-même aux côtés de Kobe Bryant, Kanye West, Danny Trejo et Bruce Willis. Il sort ensuite le 4e film Spy Kids, Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World, en août 2011 aux États-Unis. Le film ne sort pas en France à cause d'une trop faible audience aux États-Unis.

En 2012, il annonce qu'il débutera, en avril, le tournage de Machete Kills, puis à l'été, celui de Sin City : J'ai tué pour elle. Il annonce également la création de la société Quickdraw Animation, division de Troublemaker Studios spécialisée dans l'animation. L'un des premiers projets d'animation de la compagnie pourrait être une adaptation de la bande dessinée Métal hurlant.



En 2013, il lance sa propre chaîne de télévision : El Rey. En 2014, il y diffuse en exclusivité sa série télévisée Une nuit en enfer (From Dusk till Dawn: The Series), adaptée de son film du même nom sorti en 1996. La chaine diffuse également Matador, en 2014, qu'il produit.

En 2015, il est le réalisateur d'un projet fou : un film, intitulé 100 Years, qui ne sortira que 100 ans plus tard, en 2115. C'est une initiative d'une marque commercialisant le cognac Louis XIII qui vieillit pendant 100 ans. John Malkovich a imaginé trois versions du futur pour le film dans lequel il joue également.


Vie privée
En avril 2006, Robert Rodriguez annonce que lui et sa femme Elizabeth Avellan, avec qui il a eu cinq enfants (Rocket, Racer, Rebel Rodriguez, Rogue et Rhiannon), se séparent après 16 ans de mariage.

Il quitte sa femme pour Rose McGowan avec qui il a flirté pendant le tournage de Grindhouse.
En 2007, ils se fiancent, ils se séparent et se remettent ensemble plusieurs fois. Leur relation prend fin en 2009 après une annulation de leur mariage.

Il est le cousin au deuxième degré de l'acteur Danny Trejo.

He follows the two surviving frat boys into The Projects, the neighborhood where he grew up. With the assistance of the deadly residents lurking in the shadows, he dispatches the frat boys. He questions the leader about being called "Bernini Boy" and learns that it is the brand of coat he is wearing. After slitting the boy's throat, he considers his coat and realizes he can't remember how he acquired it.

In rural Texas, go-go dancer Cherry Darling (Rose McGowan) decides to quit her low-paying job and find another occupation. Max (Cayden Boyd) is a lonely child in the suburbs of Austin who creates an imaginary world named Planet Drool, where all of his imagination and dreams come to life. The two left Max to guard Planet Drool. In real life, Max's parents (David Arquette and Kristin Davis) have little time for him and their marriage seems to be on the rocks, and he is bullied by fellow schoolmate Linus (Jacob Davich). However, he does receive friendship from Marissa (Sasha Pieterse), the daughter of his teacher Mr. Electricidad (George Lopez, whose name is Spanish for "electricity"). Linus steals Max's Dream Journal (where all of his ideas are kept) and vandalizes it. The next day, a tornado rages outside the school, and moments later, Sharkboy and Lavagirl appear and ask Max to come with them to Planet Drool. They reach Planet Drool via a shark-like spacecraft, where Max learns that the dreamworld is turning bad, courtesy of Mr. Electric (also portrayed by George Lopez), originally the dreamworld's electrician but now corrupted.

Two brothers, Seth and Richard "Richie" Gecko, having just robbed a bank, stop at a liquor store to pick up a map. When the arrival of Texas Ranger Earl McGraw threatens their getaway, they kill him and the cashier, burning down the store in the process. During the gunfight, Richie is shot in the hand. Fleeing a combined force of FBI and local police, they head towards Mexico where a contact has arranged a safe-house for them. Along the way they stop at a motel and unload a bank teller whom they are holding hostage. While Seth goes out to "sight see" checking on the border and to buy fast food burgers, Richie brutally rapes and murders the teller. Seth, who pictures himself as a professional thief, becomes furious over Richie's sadistic behavior.

The film starts with Machete Cortez (Danny Trejo) and Sartana Rivera (Jessica Alba) attempting to capture weapon dealers who have been supplying the Mexican drug cartels. The military men are then all killed by the gangsters, who in turn are wiped out by another intervening party. Its leader murders Sartana while Machete is arrested by corrupt Sheriff Doakes (William Sadler) and Deputy Clebourne (Samuel Davis). Doakes unsuccessfully tries to hang Machete but the President of the US, Rathcock (Charlie Sheen), intervenes. Machete is brought to the White House, where the president offers him US citizenship if he eliminates Marcos Mendez (Demián Bichir), a psychopath who is threatening to fire a nuclear missile at Washington, D.C. if the American government does not intervene to stop the rampant drug cartels in Mexico and the corruption of its government.
