Rodrigue Jean est un scénariste, un réalisateur et un producteur de cinéma canadien, né à Caraquet (Nouveau-Brunswick). D'origine acadienne, il a toutefois vécu une bonne partie de sa vie au Québec. Il a également été metteur en scène de théâtre, danseur et chorégraphe, et a enseigné à l'Université du Québec à Montréal.

Biography

Rodrigue Jean a d'abord étudié en biologie, en sociologie et en lettres, puis travaille comme danseur et chorégraphe. Il va ensuite étudier le théâtre et la mise en scène à Londres. Il y monte des pièces de Shakespeare, de Genet et de Brad Fraser.

Jean n'a jamais voulu étudié dans les écoles de cinéma, bien que c'est le cinéma qui l'intéressait au départ. En 1990, il réalise un premier court métrage de fiction, La Déroute. En 1995, il réalise La Mémoire de l'eau, une vidéo qui remportera le prix du Meilleur scénario et le prix du réalisateur le plus prometteur à l'Atlantic Film Festival de Halifax. Entre 1995 et 1997, il tourne La voix des rivières, un documentaire sur les Acadiens du Nouveau-Brunswick, puis, en 1997, réalise L'Appel, une vidéo inspirée de La Voix humaine de Jean Cocteau. Il réalise son premier long métrage, Full Blast, en 1999.

Suite à la réalisation d'un long métrage sur les travailleurs du sexe, Hommes à louer, en 2009, il pilote, en collaboration avec Mathieu Bouchard-Malo et certains de ses anciens étudiants de l'Université du Québec à Montréal, le projet Épopée, issu d'un processus de co-création avec les participants du film. L'œuvre collective, composée de tableaux variant entre documentaires et fictions, donne lieu à un site web (epopee.me), une installation, L’État des lieux (2012), et trois longs métrages, L’État du moment (2012), L’État du monde (2012), et L'Amour au temps de la guerre civile (2014).

Épopée se présente aujourd'hui en tant que groupe d'action en cinéma. Outre le projet sur la prostitution masculine, le collectif a été à l'origine de l'installation Fractions, présenté à la Cinémathèque québécoise en 2016, et composé du triptyque Insurgence (2013), Rupture (2016) et Contrepoint (2016), tous sur le mouvement politique et social québécois issu des grèves étudiantes de 2012 et 2015. Épopée a également travaillé sur l'incarcération massive des femmes autochtones au Canada par la réalisation de La réapparition de Sheri Pranteau (2018), une installation également sous forme de triptyque, qui fut présenté au Musée d'art de Joliette.

Le dernier long métrage de Rodrigue Jean, L'acrobate, sort en première au Festival du nouveau cinéma de Montréal, en 2019.
