Roger Spottiswoode (born 5 January 1945) is a British film director, editor and writer born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada though he was raised in Britain. His father Raymond Spottiswoode was a British film theoretician who worked at the National Film Board of Canada during the 1940s.

In the 1960s, Roger entered the British film industry as a trainee editor where he apprenticed under editor John Bloom. In the early 70s Spottiswoode edited several films for Sam Peckinpah.

Spottiswoode turned to directing in the early 1980s and has since directed a number of notable films and television productions, including Under Fire (1983) and the 1997 James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies starring Pierce Brosnan. Spottiswoode was one of the writing team responsible for 48 Hrs. starring Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte. In 2000, he directed the science fiction action thriller The 6th Day starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Biography

Roger Spottiswoode a commencé sa carrière au cinéma en tant que monteur pour les films de Sam Peckinpah, avec Les Chiens de paille en 1971 et Pat Garrett et Billy le Kid en 1973.
Il travaille également avec Walter Hill, d'abord comme monteur sur le film Le Bagarreur, puis comme scénariste sur le film 48 heures.

Il fait ses premières armes en qualité de metteur en scène en 1980 avec un petit film d'horreur, Le Monstre du train avec Jamie Lee Curtis, qui surfe clairement sur le succès de la série des Halloween, puis en 1981 avec le film d'aventures 200 000 dollars en cavale.

Mais Spottiswoode n'accède véritablement à la reconnaissance critique qu'avec le film Under Fire en 1983, qui traite de l'histoire de trois journalistes pris dans la révolution au Nicaragua.

Il enchaîne par la suite plusieurs films d'action, dont un James Bond en 1997 avec Demain ne meurt jamais et À l'aube du sixième jour avec Arnold Schwarzenegger en 2000.

Il s'intéresse également à des sujets d'actualité, comme le téléfilm Les Soldats de l'espérance, qui traite de l'apparition du SIDA ou le film J'ai serré la main du diable sur le génocide au Rwanda.
