Deface is the story of Sooyoung, a faceless factory worker in a small town in North Korea who stays quiet and follows the rules. Benny (Dick Haymes), Monk (Lionel Stander) and Matthew (Roland Young) are three small-time crooks trying to escape a police dragnet in New York City. After hiding in a church and taking minister's suits and dog collars, they emerge, dressed as priests, and find shelter in an abandoned Bowery mission. When beat cops mistake them for real ministers sent to restore the soup kitchen, they're forced to go along with repairs, holding services and feeding the poor. They have to decide whether to stay, steal the mission money and run, or... change their lives. As with Jean Valjean in Les Misérables, when the bishop he has robbed lets him go, it's the first time they've been treated with respect and had a chance to do good work. The question is whether the police detectives or junior priests will turn them in before they even have a chance.

When the American business tycoon Williams is murdered by strangulation in Paris, the killer is identified almost instantly because of the signature napkin knot found around the victims throat - the signature of notorious cardplaying killer C.J. Dabney. Despite the identification, the American detective Higgins pleads to the French police not to try to apprehend the perpetrator, because he wants to catch Dabney red-handed if possible. Just like Hiigins guesses, Dabney soon finds a new victim, a newspaperman from Ohio, Freddie Hunter. Marvin Payne (Stewart) is a World War II army air force veteran trying to make it on a shoe-string with a startup air-freight business. On an overnight stay in New York he has the misfortune of being roomed next to the reluctant bride Dee Dee Dillwood (Fontaine) and her rather formal husband Henry Benson. A ruckus causes Payne to become enmeshed in the world of Miss Dillwood. Hiding from her husband, Payne assumes the rather vague Miss Dillwood is a penniless country girl come to the city, who has descended to sleeping with married men to get by. He grudgingly agrees to give her a lift out of town and encourages her to go back to her parents. All the while Payne does not realize that Miss Dillwood is independently wealthy, and the married man she was to sleep with was the man she had just exchanged vows with that afternoon. Meanwhile, Payne's fellow veteran and co-pilot, Bullets Baker (Albert) encourages Payne to relax and enjoy life. His encouragements to join him and a couple of young ladies for a few laughs fall on deaf ears. It is with great surprise than that Baker finds a girl in the straight-laced Payne's room the following morning. A rough and tumble flight across country result in a number of surprises, not the least of which is that Marvin discovers he cares for the tag-along Miss Dillwood.
