Hal Carter (William Holden) is a former college football star, adrift and unemployed after army service and a failed Hollywood acting career. On Labor Day (September 5, 1955), he arrives by freight train in a Kansas town to visit his fraternity friend, Alan Benson (Cliff Robertson), the son of a wealthy grain elevator owner, Mr. Benson (Raymond Bailey). Working for his breakfast by doing chores in the backyard of kindly Mrs. Potts (Verna Felton), Hal presents to Bomber (Nick Adams), Madge Owens (Kim Novak), her sister Millie (Susan Strasberg), and her mother (Betty Field). The later is hoping Madge will marry Alan, which would thus raise both Madge and herself into the town's highest, respectable social circles. Alan wants to marry Madge, but his father thinks she is beneath him. Madge, even when being Alan fiancé, doesn't really loves Alan and is weary of being liked only because she is pretty.

Dr. Andrew Manson (Robert Donat) is an idealistic newly qualified Scottish doctor dedicated to treating Welsh miners suffering from tuberculosis in the Welsh mining village of Blaenely and apprentice to Dr. Page (Basil Gill). Initially, he is full of lofty scientific goals, though his purpose erodes when he later moves to London to treat rich hypochondriacs, where a chance encounter with a medical school chum Dr. Frederick Lawford (Rex Harrison) leads to his quiet seduction by an ethically challenged medical establishment. Christine (Rosalind Russell), his wife tries to set him back on the original path. Lors de la croisière trans-pacifique, le ressentiment de M Jacoby à propos des jamonais est encore très fort lorsqu'elle encontre sur M. Asano, un industriel japonais dont la famille a elle aussi été beaucoup touchée par la guerre. Leur amitié naissante est malmenée lorsque Jerry suspecte M. Asano, lui-même un des négociateurs du traité, d'avoir cherché un gain politique dans cette relation. Bien que M Jacoby n'y croie pas vraiment, elle refuse de voir M. Asano lors de leur dernière soirée à bord. Une fois au Japon, Jerry offense sans le faire exprès M. Asano, et la conférence est annulée. M Jacoby se rend alors chez M. Asano. Après une soirée très agréable, il accepte de reprendre les négociations. Alors que les trois Américains se préparent à repartir, M Jacoby est surprise de recevoir une demande en mariage de M. Asano, mais aussi par la réaction négative d'Alice et Jerry. Mais en fait elle refuse surtout car elle considère que M. Asano et elle sont encore trop marqués par leurs histoires personnelles.
