Roy Rowland intègre jeune la Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer - où il fera la majeure partie de sa carrière - et y réalise d'abord des courts-métrages (notamment de la série Le Crime ne paie pas - Crime Does Not Pay -), avant que lui soit confiée, en 1943, la mise en scène de son premier long-métrage. Joe Daylight is on the run along with members of his outlaw gang, The Kid, Doc and Henri. After fleeing from a bank robbery, they manage to elude the posse chasing them after crossing into Mexico. The gang had agreed to meet up later to divide up the money, however Daylight instead tells them that he has used the money to buy a hacienda, the Casa Grande. Although several of them protest, the gang agrees to follow Daylight to the ranch. He also enlists a mystical Mexican gunfighter called ”Viajero” (Traveller) – who knows the neighbourhood and comes from a haciendero family (though few know this) – to help him fit into the role of a Mexican hacienda owner, a hidalgo.

Le détective privé, Mike Hammer est devenu alcoolique à la suite de la disparition de Valda, sa secrétaire, assistante et maîtresse. Un agent fédéral sur le point de mourir à la suite d'une blessure par balle, confie à la police qu'il ne livrera des informations sur son tueur qu'à Mark Hammer et à personne d'autre. La police « ramasse » Hammer dans la rue et après l'avoir passé à tabac et lui apprend que la balle qui a mortellement blessé le fédéral est la même que celle qui a abattu un sénateur influent l'an passé. On le conduit près du mourant, celui-ci donne le nom de code du tueur "le dragon" et lui indique que des précisions complémentaires sont disponibles dans une enveloppe à son nom à un kiosque à journaux où il a ses habitudes. Hammer comprend alors que la résolution de l'affaire peut l'aider à retrouver Valda puisqu'avant qu'elle ne disparaisse elle était à une réception chez le sénateur le soir où il a été abattu. Hammer aura du mal à remonter la filière d'autant que le marchand de journaux qu'il devait contacter est retrouvé assassiné et que la police voit d'un très mauvais œil Hammer empiéter sur ses prérogatives.

During "Operation Ice Cream" at a U.S. Navy reservation in the Arctic, buddies Danny Xavier Smith and Rico Ferrari are exempted from a swimming lesson in the icy water when their friend, Chief Boatswain's Mate William F. Clark, recruits them to bake a birthday cake for the commander. Bill explains that a planeload of replacements is due in, and if they impress the commander with the cake, they may be selected to go home. When Bill leaves them in the kitchen, Danny and Rico admit that neither one knows how to bake, and they come up with the idea to poke holes in another sailor's failed attempt at a cake, fill the holes with rum, then dress the whole thing up with candles and icing. The commander is delighted, but the cake combusts when he blows out the candles, and the three friends find themselves transferred to "Operation Mud Pie" in a snake-infested swamp.
