Ruhul Amin (Bengali: রুহুল আমিন) is a Bangladeshi-born British film director.

Biography

In the early 1980s, Amin came to Britain with his parents from Sylhet, Bangladesh. Within a year while he was at school he made his first doc-drama Prubo London.

Since then he joined British film Industry and worked as an assistant. Later he attended National Film and Television School. In 1986, he made his first feature film for Channel 4 Television entitled A Kind of English. The film was shown in the festival around the world and earned critical acclaim. The film was compared with early work of De Sica and Satyajit Ray.

Amin has made 13 films for the BBC and Channel 4. Most of them are documentaries and experimental dramas. He is currently making an epic Bengali feature based film on the life and music of a rural Bengali folk, mystic poet and singer Hason Raja played by Mithun Chakraborty, produced by Galaxy Films between UK, India and Bangladesh.

The film is about Hason Raja, a flamboyant, ruthless zamindar from Sylhet who fell in love with Dilaram, who transformed him and later he became a poet, singing songs and wandering all across Bangladesh. Hinduism, Buddhism and Sufism have influenced his songs. He was the inspiration to the Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore who had mentioned about Hason Raja at several conferences worldwide and he remains one of the greatest and most powerful icons of Bengali culture today.
