Thomas Percival Hayes (1879-1943), dit Rupert Julian, est un acteur, scénariste, réalisateur et producteur de cinéma américain d'origine néo-zélandaise.

Biography

Né Thomas Percival Hayes à Whangaroa , en Nouvelle-Zélande, Rupert Julian s'est produit au théâtre et au cinéma dans son pays natal et en Australie avant d'émigrer aux États-Unis en 1911, commençant sa carrière américaine dans le cinéma muet pour les studios Universal Pictures. Il commença la direction d'acteurs en 1915, dirigeant souvent sa femme Elsie Jane Wilson , mais son travail était plutôt routinier jusqu'à ce qu'on lui demande de terminer le film Merry-Go-Round en 1923 lorsqu'Erich von Stroheim fut remercié, puis en 1925 il dirigea Lon Chaney dans Le Fantôme de l'Opéra. Après l'avènement du parlant, sa carrière ne tarda pas à décliner, et, après avoir réalisé The Cat Creeps et Love Comes Along (tous deux en 1930), celle-ci s'arrêta.

Rupert Julian mourut à Hollywood (Californie) à l'âge de 64 ans et fut inhumé au Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery à Glendale, en Californie.

Kaiser Wilhelm II of Hohenzollern (Rupert Julian) is a vain and arrogant tyrant eager for conquest. When Belgium is invaded by the German army during World War I, Marcas, the blacksmith (Elmo Lincoln), although wounded, is able to save his daughter from the clutches of a German soldier. Soon after this, the RMS Lusitania is sunk by Captain von Neigle (Nigel De Brulier), who ultimately is driven mad with remorse. After the United States declares war, the Allied generals turn the Kaiser over to Albert I of Belgium. Incarcerated, the Kaiser faces his jailer, Marcas the blacksmith.

An actress, Peggy, is stranded on the island of Caparoja, which is ruled by a local dictator, Sangredo. For a living, she sings in the local tavern, where she is seen by two sailors from a tramp steamer who are visiting the port, Johnny and Happy. Johnny falls in love with Peggy and plans to marry her, rescuing her from her exile. However, Sangredo hires Peggy to perform at a party he is throwing, when the original singer, Carlotta, backs out. When Johnny finds out about the agreement, he misunderstands their relationship, and blows up at her. Peggy gets furious in turn over the fact he could believe that about her, and calls the wedding off.
