Russell Metty, A.S.C. (September 20, 1906 – April 28, 1978) was an American cinematographer who won the Academy Award Best Cinematography, Color, for the 1960 film Spartacus.

Biography

Russell Metty débute au cinéma en 1931 ; d'abord premier assistant opérateur, puis cadreur, il devient chef opérateur en 1934. Il contribue en tout à plus de 150 films américains, jusqu'en 1974.

Parmi les réalisateurs avec lesquels il travaille, mentionnons John Huston (ex. : Les Désaxés en 1961, avec Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Montgomery Clift), Stanley Kubrick (Spartacus en 1960, avec Kirk Douglas, Jean Simmons), George Sherman (ex. : À l'abordage en 1952, avec Errol Flynn, Maureen O'Hara) et Orson Welles (ex. : Le Criminel en 1946, avec Loretta Young, Orson Welles), entre autres. Tribes tells the story of Private Adrian (Jan-Michael Vincent), a young United States Marine Corps Vietnam war era draftee who, despite being an anti-war hippie, reluctantly reports to boot camp to fulfill his duty as an American. Adrian naturally excels as a leader, though his pacifist ideology presents continuing conflicts between himself and his superiors. Adrian's drill instructor, Gunnery Sgt. Thomas Drake (Darren McGavin), quickly recognizes Adrian's leadership qualities, but is conflicted as he grows to respect Adrian while also realizing that he represents everything Adrian opposes. At one point, Adrian points out that his love of meditation is similar to Drake's drawing to relax, indicating a sketch of a flying bird. Both are ways of finding freedom. Drake responds angrily, denying that he had drawn the picture.

Lionel Evans (Charlton Heston) is the director of a well-respected symphony orchestra touring European concert halls around 1944 in WW2. In the midst of one concert, the city where they are playing is attacked by German troops, and when Evans and his musicians try to escape, they are captured by Nazi soldiers led by Col. Arndt (Anton Diffring). Evans and the orchestra are taken to a castle where they are to bide their time before being executed; but it turns out that Arndt's superior, Gen. Schiller (Maximilian Schell), is a big classical music fan. Schiller commands Evans and his symphony to prepare a special concert for the Nazis, but Evans realizes that the moment the concert is over, he and his musicians will be killed.
