Rikio Ishikawa, a member of the Kawada yakuza family in Shinjuku, assaults and steals money from the Aoki gang, members of the rival Shinwa family from Ikebukuro, for operating in their territory. Nami Matsushima (Meiko Kaji) is set up by her boyfriend, a crooked police detective named Sugimi (Isao Natsuyagi) to win favor with the Yakuza. She is raped by several drug dealers. She makes a failed attempt to stab Sugimi on the steps of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Headquarters. She is sentenced to do hard time in a women's prison. Matsushima is given the number 701. The prison is run by sadistic and lecherous male guards. The prisoners are forced to walk up and down a stair-like contraption naked with male guards watching from below. While in prison she meets inmates like Yuki Kida (Yayoi Watanabe) who was committed for fraud and theft, Otsuka (Akemi Negishi), jailed for burglary and extortion, and Katagiri (Rie Yokoyama) who has been impounded for arson and illegally disposing of a body. On the outside, Sugimi and the Japanese mafia orchestrate a plan in which Matsushima will succumb to an "accidental" death in prison. They enlist the help of Katagiri, pulling on her ties to both Sugimi and the mafia, and quickly set their plan in motion.

Ogami Ittō, the disgraced former shogun's executioner, or Kogi Kaishakunin, is traveling by river on a boat with his young son Daigoro floating behind in the baby cart. A young woman at the front of the boat, clearly distraught for some reason, accidentally drops a bundle into the water, which Daigoro retrieves. Ittō, draws his sword partway and notices in the reflection on the blade that some bamboo reeds are trailing the boat. Ittō is being followed by operatives of his mortal enemy, the Yagyū Clan – a constant threat that he can never ignore. Later, as Daigorou is relieving himself in a bamboo glade, Ittō slices some bamboo stalks, causing some ninja to fall from their perch.

Many years ago ronin killed parents of the young girl named O-kin, and crippled her by cut off her right arm and gouged out her right eye. Nevertheless, this girl grew up and became a great swordswoman. Despite her mutilated body, she is unbeatable. Now, she lives in the small town and owns a very valuable and rare sword - The Drenched Swallow. O-kin protects from robbers and ronin a little girl and her grandfather. Local Daimyo collects swords and orders to samurai takes away all swords from its owners. A few samurai came to girl's home and kill her grandfather before were killed by O-kin. Mr Tajimaya, homme d'affaires peu regardant, veut détruire une partie d'un village (qui est d'ailleurs un lieu sacré) pour à la place y construire un bordel, malgré le mécontentement des villageois. Il a hérité de cette terre en faisant jadis affaire avec Jinbei, ex-propriétaire du lieu, lui prêtant de l'argent afin d'acheter des médicaments pour sa femme malade. Jinbei, ne pouvant payer, avait mis en effet son terrain en gage. Profitant du passage d'un magistrat religieux (et corrompu) sans qui le lieu de pèlerinage n'aurait pu être détruit, Tajimaya organise une petite fête atypique: il invite un conteur pour qu'il raconte les "100 Histoires". La tradition veut qu'à chaque histoire, une bougie soit éteinte. Et qu'à la fin de la dernière histoire, tous les convives participent à un rituel pour conjurer le mauvais sort, sans quoi des fantômes et démons apparaîtraient.
