The film starts with Akhil Lokande (Akshay Kumar) getting paid for doing an ad, where he gets into a fight, as he wasn't paid the full amount of money that they had promised. This continues with a few other ads, where Akhil constantly ends the fight when he gets a phone call, and says he has to go somewhere. He then arrives on a shoot where Sakshi (Tamannaah Bhatia) is shooting for her television series. After her shoot lets out, they go for a walk around the park, observing other couples. At the end of their walk, Akhil proposes to Saakshi. Akhil and Saakshi go to her father's (Mithun Chakraborty) house, where they are told that until Akhil becomes rich, he can't marry Saakshi.

The story follows Aarush, (Akshay Kumar), a 'Panauti' who works in bar and gets money as people lose games of poker. After being rejected from getting married by a girl he goes to London to stay for some time with his best friend, Bob (Ritesh Deshmukh) and his wife, Hetal (Lara Dutta), both working at a casino owned by Mr.Kishore Samtani (Randhir Kapoor). Although at first Hetal is displeased with Aarush's presence, he proves to be a kind-hearted man looking for family. Bob and Hetal decide to get him married to their boss' daughter, Devika Samtani (Jiah Khan). After the marriage, on their honeymoon in Italy, Devika leaves him for her long-time American boyfriend Benny. Aarush decides to commit suicide by drowning in the sea but is saved by a Telugu girl Sandy (Deepika Padukone), who he kissed when she was trying to make him breathe.

Le film Kalank se situe en 1945 dans une Inde pré-indépendante, où le monde solennel, élitiste et opulent de la famille Chaudhry, et celui de Hira Mandi, le quartier pauvre, sauvage, mystérieux et musical de la ville, s’affrontent lorsque Roop Chaudhry rencontre Zafar, forgeron casse-cou, bagarreur et coureur de jupons. Ils se retrouvent pris sur le champ de bataille de l'amour pendant que toute la ville est à feu et à sang. La question est de savoir si cet amour fou s’éteindra dans le rouge de la violence ou s’épanouira dans celui de l’amour.

The story begins on the eve of the wedding of Veera Tripathi (Alia Bhatt), the daughter of a rich business tycoon. She is at a Fuel Station by the highway with her fiancé when she is abducted.
