An English teacher named Seiji Hasumi (Hideaki Itō) is loved by his students and respected by his peers. He graduates from Harvard College with an MBA, and works at Morgenstern, a European investment bank, for two years. Hasumi returns to Japan to pursue high school teaching. However, his outward charm masks his true nature. In reality, Hasumi is a sociopath who is unable to feel empathy for other human beings. Specifically, he has a severe antisocial personality disorder. Having killed both of his parents and his former tutor at the age of fourteen, Hasumi turns into a fiendishly clever killer. During his time in the States, Hasumi meets a partner in crime, an American named Dave, who thinks he shares the same "hobby" as Hasumi – killing people for fun. The two can be seen carrying buckets full of human blood, bones, and organs somewhere, giving off the notion that they committed numerous murders while working together. Hasumi eventually kills his partner by knocking him out and burning him alive inside a barrel, stating that while Dave enjoys killing for fun, Hasumi does not.

The story concerns an American man who must travel to rural Japan after his estranged son dies there in a traffic accident. While there, he discovers some secrets his son left behind. The Harimaya Bridge is a film about racism and forgiveness. The main character lost his son and he had to go to Japan to retrieve some of his sons paintings. The father (main character) had a very strong dislike for the Japanese people. He was very rude towards them in the beginning. He disrespected their culture as well on several occasions. One time he ignored the Japanese people when they told him to take off his shoes when he entered the home he was staying them. It took them a few minutes to get him to respect their wish and take off his shoes.

Dans les années soixante, Riichi est un petit garçon turbulent qui, dans sa désobéissance et sa désinvolture, tient de son père, un bon à rien qui se laisse vivre au crochet de sa femme. Le couple vit avec le grand père un homme qui s’occupe et partage quelques bêtises avec son petit fils. Une veuve et ses deux fils, Seitaro et Koji, vivent dans la petite ville de Komori, où les Buraku (descendants de la classe des parias de l'époque féodale) sont contraints de résider.
