Salvatore "Salvo" Randone (25 September 1906 – 6 March 1991) was an Italian theatrical, television and film actor.
Born in Syracuse, Sicily, Randone debuted on stage in mid-20s and, after some years in which he played roles of little weight, he became in the fifties one of the most critically appreciated actors in Italian theatre. After a few minor roles in 40s and 50s he started in early sixties a quite prolific film career as character actor; for his performances he was awarded with two Silver Ribbons and a grolla d'oro. Randone appeared in 45 films between 1943 and 1977. He was also very prolific as television actor, starring in some TV-series of great success. He was married to the actress Neda Naldi.

The melodrama is set in the torpid season of the Italian seaside resort Rimini, where the local town "bourgeoisie" pass their time gambling and leading a playboy lifestyle. When a handsome though unkempt phlegmatic Daniel Dominici (Alain Delon) arrives as a substitute teacher of classical languages to the local high school, he arouses their interest and the curiosity of his boorish students. Fabio, un étudiant en architecture, militant de Lotta Continua, formation de l'extrême-gauche italienne, participe à une manifestation. Celle-ci dégènère en affrontement sanglant entre forces de l'ordre et jeunes contestataires. Au cours de cet événement, un étudiant est tué d'une balle de calibre 7,65. Fabio est lui-même violemment malmené. Il s'empare alors d'un poing américain, trouvé au sol, et blesse mortellement un agent de police. Alors qu'un de ses compagnons, Massimo Trotti, est inculpé pour ce meurtre, Fabio veut se constituer prisonnier mais son responsable politique l'en dissuade. Le juge Aldo Sola, le propre père de Fabio, est chargé d'enquêter sur les deux assassinats. Les premiers interrogatoires ne donnent pas de résultats fiables : les culpabilités respectives n'ont guère été formellement établies. Afin de prouver l'innocence de Massimo, Fabio subtilise dans le bureau de son père les procès-verbaux d'instruction et transmet les copies au journal La Cause du Peuple, organe de Lotta Continua, qui publie en titre : « La magistrature accumule de fausses preuves contre Trotti ». Désormais, la confrontation entre un père et son fils s'avère inévitable.

A recently promoted police inspector (Gian Maria Volonté) kills his mistress (Florinda Bolkan), and then covers up his involvement in the crime. He insinuates himself into the investigation, planting clues to steer his subordinate officers toward a series of other suspects, including the woman's gay husband and a student radical. He then exonerates the other suspects and leads the investigators toward him, in order to prove that he is "above suspicion" and can get away with anything, even while being investigated. In the end, he confesses to the crime in front of his superiors - who refuse to believe him. Sure that he is safe, he recants his confession, and receives the approval of the police commissioner.
