The movie opens to a school where a boy recites before the school. Another boy is seen running to school as he is late. The teacher punishes him comparing to the boy who recited earlier, who is his younger step-brother. Enmity grows in the older boy as he is always compared to this younger brother. The younger brother burns the photo of the father of the older one as he was the reason for his defeat in the school's kabadi match. In retaliation, the older brother throws the younger one into a well. Watching him get drowned in the well, the older brother runs away from the village.

Mumbai-based Tanvi Sharma, married to Financer, Nikhil, for 3 years, is thrilled when she is not only promoted as Assistant Vice-President with her employer, ICBI Bank, but also tests positive for motherhood. Karthik (Naga Chaitanya) is a mechanical engineering graduate but aspires to become a filmmaker. Through his friend, Karthik gets introduced to director Puri Jagannadh. With his support,Karthik family, who are Hindus, rents the ground floor of a two-storeyed house which belongs to the Thekekuttus. The Thekekuttu family is a conservative Malayali Syrian Catholic family from Alappuzha, Kerala, who live upstairs. The Thekekuttus have a daughter, Jessie (Samantha), who is 2 years older to Karthik. When Karthik meets Jessie for the first time, he falls in love with her. Karthik expresses his love one day to her, who is afraid of speaking to men around her strict father, and ends up angering Jessie. The two meet several times afterwards and Jessie begins to admit that she likes Karthik but wants to refrain from any problems because she knows her father won't accept a Hindu marrying their daughter. Her parents learn about their affair and arrange a marriage for her. But at the wedding, she refuses to marry the groom, displeasing everyone in her family. Karthik and Jessie continue to love each other without the knowledge of their parents. Suddenly, Jessie is forced by her father to marry and seeks Karthik's help, who was in Goa for a film shooting. Busy Karthik is unable to attend to her calls and messages; Jessie is unable to reach him. After a tense phone call from Jessie, Karthik goes back one night to check on her. An angry and hurt Jessie makes a final decision to break up with Karthik because of her father's strong disapproval of their love.

Shakthivel (Bharath) is the son of a wealthy industrialist and the managing director of Rajasekar Industries. His mother Kamala is suing the company because Shakthi insulted her for having an affair with the company auditor. To add to that, the girl he loved got married to someone else. Disgusted with life, he gets up and walks aimlessly, taking a bus to the Chennai Railway Station. There he boards the Pandian Express at night without a ticket and sits in gloom. Anjali (Tamannaah) is a college student who is going to her hometown Theni for vacation. Anjali is bubbly and talkative and thoroughly irritates Shakthi. She tells him of her plans to elope with her lover Gautham. At night, Shakthi leaves the train. Anjali wakes up to find him gone. Seeing him sitting on the platform, she gets off the train to bring him back. As a result she misses the train. She tells Shakthi that it is his responsibility to take her back to the train. Annoyed, he takes her to the next station so that she can board the train and leaves her. Anjali again misses the train. While she is waiting for a taxi to reach the next station, some gangsters chase her, but she runs into Shakthi who fights them off.
