Teenagers Sarah (Weaver) and Debbie (Murdock) run away from home, before meeting shortly after arriving in London. Debbie, the older and more streetwise of the two, is running from a generally bad home life, where her family is poor and her father drinks excessively. Sarah is running from a more affluent home, where she has been sexually abused by her father (Jayston). Both girls stay at a hostel for runaways. Debbie manages to get herself into college, while Sarah unsuccessfully tries to get her father prosecuted, but is instead returned home by the authorities. She runs away again, and ends up on the streets selling herself. She attempts suicide by stepping out in front of a lorry, but is injured and ends up in hospital. The film ends as she lies in hospital, while in the background a radio plays. Debbie calls a request show asking for a dedication for Sarah, with whom she has lost touch.

The death of King Henry VIII of England throws his kingdom into chaos as his heir, Edward VI, is both under-age and in poor health. Anticipating the young king's imminent death from consumption and anxious to keep England true to the Reformation by keeping the Catholic Mary from the throne, John Dudley, Lord President of the Council and second only to the king in power, hatches a plan to marry his son, Lord Guildford, to Lady Jane Grey, and have the royal physician keep the young king Edward VI alive—albeit in excruciating pain—long enough to get him to name Jane his heir.

Rather than a straightforward narrative, the film presents Liszt's life through a series of episodes. At the start of the film, Liszt is caught in bed with Marie d'Agoult by her husband the Count d'Agoult. The Count challenges Liszt to a fight with sabres but Marie begs the count to let her share Liszt's fate. The Count then orders his staff to trap Liszt and Marie into the body of a piano, nailing it shut, and then leaving it on railroad tracks.

In a future post-apocalypse Earth in the year 2293, the human population is divided into the immortal "Eternals" and mortal "Brutals". The Brutals live in a wasteland, growing food for the Eternals, who live apart in "the Vortex", leading a luxurious but aimless existence on the grounds of a country estate. The connection between the two groups is through Brutal Exterminators, who kill and terrorize other "Brutals" at the orders of a huge flying stone head called Zardoz, which supplies them with weapons in exchange for the food they collect. Zed (Connery), a Brutal Exterminator, hides aboard Zardoz during one trip, temporarily "killing" its Eternal operator-creator Arthur Frayn (Niall Buggy).
