In 1835 Paris, Ryno de Marigny (Fu'ad Aït Aattou), before getting married to the young and innocent Hermangarde (Roxanne Mesquida), makes a last visit to La Vellini (Asia Argento), his Spanish mistress, to bid goodbye in an act of lovemaking. His liaison with La Vellini is the subject of Parisian gossip, and before Hermangarde's grandmother gives her blessing, she wants to hear from Ryno everything about this relationship. Ryno reveals a tempestuous story but indicates that his ten year romance is over; he now is in love with Hermangarde. After the marriage, the newlyweds move away to a castle at the seashore. They are happy and soon Hermangarde conceives. But the "last/old mistress" reappears, and while Ryno tries to keep her out of his life, she is not to be rejected, and Hermangarde finds out about it.

Mickael (Johan Libereau) is from a poor working class family - his father Gérard (Jean-Philippe Ecoffey) is a taxi cab driver who lost his license and then his job as a result of a police roadblock targeting drivers under the influence of alcohol. His mother Annie (Florence Thomassin) works as a cleaning woman in the high school gym: After this they have a tough time financially. Not a great student, Mickael excels in judo and his life is focused on his sport and on his girlfriend Vanessa (Salomé Stévenin). One of Mickael's teammates Clément (Pierre Perrier) is from a wealthy family: his father Louis Steiner (Aurelien Recoing) uses a wheelchair and his mother Mathilde (Claire Nebout) is a woman of the world and society. Louis decides to sponsor the judo team, buys them outfits, and asks Mickael to work with Clement to perfect his technique and prepare the judo team for a French championship.

Suite à un accident de voiture, Jean Mardet abrège les souffrances de sa femme blessée en la tuant à coups de pierre. Dix ans plus tard, il invite chez lui un homme dépressif, qui a perdu toute sa famille dans une noyade, et le tue aussitôt avant de l'enterrer dans son jardin. Depuis le meurtre de sa femme, Mardet se sent investi d'une mission que Dieu en personne lui aurait confiée : tuer les âmes malheureuses. Deux policiers, Castan et Moreau, le suspectent d'être un tueur en série. Mais lorsque la femme de Moreau le quitte, ce dernier s'épanche auprès de Mardet, qu'il ne soupçonne plus, qu'il voit maintenant comme son seul ami.
