Shahid Lateef (11 June 1913 - 16 April 1967) was Hindi film director, writer, and producer. He was the maker of films like Ziddi (1948) with launched Dev Anand's career and Arzoo (1950) starring Dilip Kumar and Kamini Kaushal. Noted Urdu poet Kaifi Azmi started his career as a lyricist with his film Buzdil in 1951.

Biography

He was born in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh and studied at Aligarh Muslim University. In 1941, he married noted Urdu writer Ismat Chughtai (1915–1991), and they had two daughters.

The husband wife duo worked together on many films, where Ismat was sometimes a scenarist, a writer or at times even producer.
He died in Mumbai, Maharashtra on 16 April 1967.

Reporter Jitendra (Dharmendra) exposes dangerous working conditions in a mine owned by one of his employer's crooked creditors. He loses his job. When disaster strikes at the mine, Amita (Mala Sinha), daughter of the paper's deceased founder re-employs him. Her interest in him is more than just journalism. Unknown to her, her younger sister (Tanuja) is romantically linked to the reporter. The resultant conflict and anguish culminate in the sisters attempting to sacrifice their future happiness for the sake of the other.

Kalpana (Shobha Khote) and Vinod (Manoj Kumar) are in love but meet opposition from their parents. The respective parents have arranged partners for them and the two give in to the demands. They meet to plan a way out of this dilemma and decide to behave in manner unacceptable to their spouses. Vinod is married to a simple, kind and gentle girl Asha (Azra), while Kalpana marries an army officer. Finally with the help of Vinod's Uncle (David), Asha is able to win the love of her husband, while Kalpana is happily married to her army husband.

A young widow called Kamala (Aruna Devi) approaches the new zamindar of her village to waive off the land tax as she is in financially straitened circumstances.
