Shane Meadows (born 26 December 1972) is an English film director, screenwriter, occasional actor and BAFTA winner.

Biography

Il grandit dans le quartier de Westlands Road : son père est chauffeur de camion et sa mère travaille dans une boutique de Fish and Chips. Il travaille le week-end sur le marché de fruits et légumes.

Peu attiré par l'école, Shane abandonne sa scolarité avant l'entrée au lycée. Autodidacte, il est influencé par les films de Clint Eastwood et de Martin Scorsese. « Je pensais que le but ultime à atteindre pour tout homme dans sa vie, c'était cette virilité violente. Je rêvais d'être comme Jimmy Boyle, John Mc Vicar ou Kray. Tout comme les gamins d'aujourd'hui adorent Beckham, j'adorais Jimmy Boyle. Je voulais voir les hommes se battre, je cherchais à provoquer cette violence et c'est devenu très difficile pour moi de vivre avec ce sentiment. »

Installé à Nottingham depuis 1992, c'est là qu'il commence sa carrière de réalisateur, avec un premier long-métrage, Small Time, distribué en 1996, et surtout Where's The Money, Ronnie?, un court-métrage réalisé la même année qui lui fait acquérir un début de notoriété. L'année suivante il tourne son second long-métrage, Twenty Four Seven.

12-year-old boys Romeo Brass and Gavin Woolley have been best friends and neighbors for the majority of their lives. Gavin suffers from injuries to his back to subject him to bullying from other local boys to which Romeo quickly steps to defend him. On one particular day two boys confront Gavin and once again Romeo steps in and things turn violent, and since Gavin's injury prevents him from fighting he can't assist his friend. During the fight Gavin spots Morell and calls for him to help and Morell chases the two boys off and then drives Romeo and Gavin home. Upon meeting Morell Romeo's family quickly deduce his behavior as peculiar. Morell quickly develops an immediate attraction to Romeo's sister Ladine and seeks Romeo's advice to go out with her, Gavin takes the opportunity to play a trick on Morell that would result in him humiliating himself. Morell returns to the shop where Ladine works to apologize and ask her out again to which she accepts out of pity.

In a typical English working-class town, the juveniles have nothing more to do than hang around in gangs. Somers Town follows several days in the lives of two teenage boys, Tomo and Marek, who develop a mutual trust and form an unlikely friendship. Marek, a Polish immigrant, lives with his father, who drinks too much. The film begins with Tomo running away to London from a lonely, difficult life in Nottingham. When Tomo arrives at his destination, he attempts to enjoy cans of Carling that he asked a stranger to purchase for him. His luck changes when three boys approach him and ask him questions. The gang robs Tomo of his bag, which contains all of his money and clothes. They also beat him up, leaving him severely bruised.
