Simon Williams (born 16 June 1946), is an English actor known for playing James Bellamy in the period drama Upstairs, Downstairs. Frequently playing upper middle class or aristocratic upper class roles, he is also known for playing Dr. Charles Cartwright in the sitcom Don't Wait Up and Sir Charles Merrick in medical drama Holby City.
Williams married actress Belinda Carroll, with whom he had two children, Tam and Amy, both actors. They divorced. He married again in 1986 to the actress Lucy Fleming, the daughter of Peter Fleming and Celia Johnson and the niece of James Bond creator Ian Fleming. Williams trained in repertory at Worthing, Birmingham and Bath, and later joined the Theatre Workshop.

Simon Williams was born in Windsor, Berkshire, in 1946 and his parents were the actor Hugh Williams and his wife Margaret Vyner. Williams's brother is the poet Hugo Williams, and his sister Polly married his Don't Wait Up co-star and friend Nigel Havers.Williams married actress Belinda Carroll, with whom he had two children, Tam and Amy, both actors. They divorced. He married again in 1986 to the actress Lucy Fleming, the daughter of Peter Fleming and Celia Johnson and the niece of James Bond creator Ian Fleming. Williams trained in repertory at Worthing, Birmingham and Bath, and later joined the Theatre Workshop.

The film opens in 1934 with Winston Churchill deep in his wilderness years, and struggling to complete his biography of his ancestor the Duke of Marlborough, which he hopes will revive his fortunes. Winston is chided by his wife Clemmie for their lack of money and is aware that as a 'man of destiny' his moment may have passed. King Rudolf IV (Sellers) dies in a balloon accident upon the celebration of his seventieth birthday. In order to secure the throne, General Sapt and his nephew Fritz travel to London, where the King's son, Rudolf V (Sellers), resides and lives through the day in London's pleasure establishments; but the King's demented half-brother Michael (Kemp), thinking that he is the better claimant, sends an assassin after them. Hansom cab driver Sydney (or Sidney) Frewin (Sellers), the new King's half-brother from an affair with a British actress, rescues Rudolf from an assassination attempt. Once his resemblance to the King is noticed, Frewin is hired by the general ostensibly as the King's coachman, but actually to play the role of decoy. The ruse is quickly uncovered, however, when during an attack by Michael's men the royal guardsmen address Frewin as their new king, and the two look-alikes get acquainted.
